Chapter 6 – Lucas’s Revenge

Chapter 6 – Lucas’s Revenge

Willow learned something dangerous about betrayal.

The first betrayal breaks your heart.

The second one changes the way you see the world.

The first time Lucas lied to her, she was a wife discovering her husband had never truly protected her.

The second time, she was a woman discovering that love itself had been used as a weapon.

But the third time...

The third time was different.

Because by then, she knew exactly what kind of man Lucas Sterling was.

And she knew exactly what he was capable of.

The message arrived at 6:42 in the morning.

Not from Lucas.

From a news alert.

STERLING HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST WILLOW DONOVAN-STIRLING REGARDING COMPANY ASSETS.

She stared at the headline.

For a moment, she could not understand it.

Then she opened the article.

Her hands went cold.

Richard Sterling had moved first.

The statement was carefully written.

Professional.

Polished.

Completely false.

It claimed Willow was suffering from emotional instability after the anniversary incident.

It claimed she had misunderstood confidential family agreements.

It claimed Richard Sterling had only tried to protect his company from an "unpredictable former family member."

Former family member.

The phrase made her stomach turn.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of sacrifice.

And now she was a threat.

Michael read the article silently.

Then placed his phone on the table.

“He's afraid.”

Willow looked up.

“He doesn't seem afraid.”

Her father shook his head.

“People who are afraid don't always run.”

A pause.

“Sometimes they attack.”

The attack began immediately.

Within hours, three newspapers published stories questioning Willow’s character.

They mentioned her father.

Her childhood.

Her gallery.

Everything Richard had mocked for years suddenly became public ammunition.

Billionaire Heiress?

Or Manipulative Social Climber?

Did Willow Donovan Use Marriage to Gain Access to Sterling Fortune?

Willow read the articles without crying.

That surprised her.

A month ago, those words would have destroyed her.

Now?

They felt like evidence.

Because she finally understood.

Richard was not trying to convince her.

He was trying to convince everyone else.

“Why is Lucas helping him?”

The question had been haunting her.

Because Lucas had been the one person she thought might break away.

The one person who knew the truth.

The one person who had admitted his guilt.

But he had not come back.

He had not apologized.

He had disappeared.

Then he appeared on television.

The interview was broadcast at noon.

Lucas sat in front of a wall of Sterling Holdings awards.

The image was carefully chosen.

A successful executive.

A grieving husband.

A victim.

The interviewer spoke softly.

“Lucas Sterling, your wife has accused your family of controlling her marriage. How do you respond?”

Lucas looked down.

A perfect performance.

“I think Willow is hurting.”

Willow froze.

“Hurting?”

The interviewer nodded.

Lucas continued.

“I loved my wife.”

Past tense.

Loved.

“But after the anniversary incident, things became complicated.”

Michael immediately reached for the remote.

“No.”

Willow stopped him.

“Leave it.”

She needed to see.

She needed to understand.

Lucas continued.

“I accept responsibility for losing my temper.”

A carefully placed pause.

“But I believe there were pressures that people don't understand.”

Pressures.

There it was.

The excuse.

The same word every abuser used.

The same word powerful people used when they wanted sympathy.

The interviewer asked:

“Do you believe Willow is trying to damage your family?”

Lucas looked directly into the camera.

And Willow felt something inside her go completely still.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I believe she wants revenge.”

Michael turned off the television.

The room was silent.

Willow did not move.

She simply stared at the blank screen.

“He chose.”

Michael said quietly.

Willow nodded.

“Yes.”

And somehow...

That hurt less than she expected.

Because she had spent years hoping Lucas would become someone else.

Now she finally accepted something.

He had always shown her who he was.

She had just loved the version she wanted to believe existed.

That afternoon, a package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was a single envelope.

Willow recognized the handwriting immediately.

Lucas.

She opened it carefully.

The letter contained only one page.

Willow,

I know you hate me. You should.

But before you decide I am exactly like my father, you need to know something.

The interview was not my choice.

He forced me.

He has information that could destroy someone I love.

I need you to understand something.

I am not asking you to forgive me.

I am asking you to survive.

Richard is not trying to win.

He is trying to erase you.

And he already started.

Look into the foundation.

Look into your mother's death.

The truth is there.

Lucas

Willow read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

Michael watched her carefully.

“You believe him?”

She folded the paper.

“I don't know.”

“That means you do.”

“No.”

She looked at her father.

“It means I believe everyone has secrets.”

That night, Willow entered the Sterling Foundation database.

The account information was protected.

Encrypted.

But Richard had made one mistake.

He believed Willow was not dangerous.

He believed she was only emotional.

He believed she was only a wife.

He forgot she was Sophia Donovan's daughter.

After three hours, she found it.

A hidden transfer.

Twenty-five years earlier.

The week after her mother died.

A payment.

A large payment.

To a private medical company.

The name was unfamiliar.

Havenridge Research Institute.

Willow searched deeper.

The company no longer existed.

But the records remained.

One file.

One patient.

One name.

She opened it.

And stopped breathing.

Because the patient was listed as:

Sophia Donovan.

Willow stared at the screen.

That was impossible.

Her mother died twenty-five years ago.

There should not be a medical file.

There should not be a patient record.

There should not be anything.

Then she saw the final entry.

Patient status: transferred.

Not deceased.

Transferred.

Michael walked into the room.

“What did you find?”

Willow turned slowly.

Her face had lost all color.

“Dad
”

He looked at the screen.

And for the first time in Willow's entire life...

She saw her father afraid.

Really afraid.

“What is it?”

Michael whispered.

Willow pointed.

“My mother.”

A pause.

“She didn't die.”

The room became silent.

Then Michael sat down.

Because the truth he had buried for twenty-five years...

Had just returned.

The next morning, Lucas arrived unexpectedly.

Michael nearly refused to let him inside.

But Willow stopped him.

“Let him talk.”

Lucas entered.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Broken.

“I know what you found.”

Willow stared.

“How?”

Lucas hesitated.

“Because my father knows too.”

Her heart sank.

“What does he know?”

Lucas looked at her.

“That Sophia Donovan is alive.”

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Then Lucas said the sentence that changed everything.

“My father has been hiding your mother for twenty-five years.”

Willow felt the world shift.

Her mother was alive.

Her father had been silent.

Richard had lied.

Lucas had known.

Everyone had known something.

Except her.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Why would he keep her alive?”

Lucas looked at her with guilt.

“Because your mother knew the truth about him.”

A pause.

“And because Richard Sterling built his entire empire on a lie.”

Willow looked out the window.

Chicago stretched endlessly below.

Five years of marriage.

Twenty-five years of secrets.

A lifetime of believing she knew her family.

She had been wrong.

And somewhere in the city...

Richard Sterling stood in his office watching the same news reports.

His assistant asked:

“What do we do now?”

Richard looked at the photograph on his desk.

A photograph of Sophia Donovan.

Still beautiful.

Still dangerous.

Still alive.

His expression hardened.

“Find her.”

A pause.

“And if Willow reaches her first
”

He looked toward the city.

“Make sure she never gets the chance to tell the world.”

For the first time in twenty-five years...

Richard Sterling was no longer protecting an empire.

He was protecting a crime.

And Willow was about to discover the most terrifying truth of all.

The woman she spent her entire life mourning...

May you like

Was waiting for her.
