Chapter 2 — The Arrest Everyone Misunderstood

Chapter 2 — The Arrest Everyone Misunderstood

Gasps swept across the ballroom as the six federal agents moved in perfect formation.

Every guest instinctively stepped aside.

The lead agent, a woman with silver-framed glasses and an unreadable expression, stopped directly in front of Daniel Vale.

"Mr. Daniel Vale?"

My father's shoulders remained square.

"Yes."

"We need a word with you."

The whispers exploded.

"I knew it..."

"The Mercer family was right..."

"Vale Construction is under investigation..."

Celeste Mercer slowly stood, unable to hide the satisfaction spreading across her face.

"I told everyone," she said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "No honest businessman builds an empire that quickly."

Nolan finally found his confidence again.

He smirked.

"I suppose this wedding really is over."

He looked at me.

"Without your father, you're nothing."

I didn't answer.

Instead, I watched the lead agent remove a sealed envelope from her briefcase.

"Mr. Vale," she said, "would you please confirm that this evidence package came from your legal counsel this morning?"

My father nodded calmly.

"It did."

"And did your daughter personally submit the supporting financial records?"

"She did."

The agent turned toward the crowd.

"Then I can officially acknowledge receipt."

The ballroom fell silent again.

Celeste frowned.

"...Receipt?"

The agent looked directly at Nolan.

"Mr. Nolan Mercer."

"You are under federal investigation for financial fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, extortion, and aggravated domestic assault."

Nolan laughed.

"No."

"No, you've made a mistake."

The agent opened another folder.

"We haven't."

She projected several documents onto the ballroom screens.

Hidden offshore accounts.

Forged construction invoices.

Bribery payments.

Transfers through shell corporations.

Every page carried the Mercer Holdings logo.

Every transaction traced back to Nolan.

The guests stared in disbelief.

Then another recording played.

Nolan's own voice.

"If Daniel refuses the merger..."

"...we'll bankrupt him using his daughter's signature."

Nolan's face lost all color.

He turned sharply toward me.

"You..."

I met his eyes.

"I told you."

"You gave me witnesses."

The lead agent continued.

"Mr. Vale."

"Thank you for your cooperation."

My father smiled politely.

"Anything to protect my daughter."

The realization spread through the ballroom like wildfire.

Daniel Vale had never been the target.

He had been helping build the case.
