CHAPTER 13: CYNTHIA VALE’S FINAL MOVE

CHAPTER 13: CYNTHIA VALE’S FINAL MOVE

The most dangerous people are not always the ones who attack you.

Sometimes they are the ones who apologize.

Because an apology can be genuine.

Or it can be another strategy.

For a long time, I believed Cynthia Vale’s greatest weapon was her wealth.

Her connections.

Her family name.

I was wrong.

Her greatest weapon was her ability to make people doubt what they already knew.

And even after losing almost everything…

She still had one final move.

Three weeks after Cynthia came to my company, I thought she was finally letting go.

The lawsuits stopped.

The public attacks disappeared.

The rumors became quieter.

The Vale family seemed exhausted.

Broken.

I wanted to believe that people could change.

Maybe because I had changed.

Maybe because I did not want to carry anger forever.

But forgiveness does not mean forgetting.

And my instincts had become sharper.

It started with a phone call from Daniel.

“Amelia, I need you to look at something.”

His tone immediately changed my mood.

“What happened?”

“We received a request from Vale Holdings.”

I frowned.

“About what?”

“A settlement proposal.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“A settlement?”

“Yes.”

“That’s strange.”

“It is.”

After everything that happened, the Vale family suddenly wanted peace.

That was not impossible.

But it was suspicious.

“What are they offering?”

I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“More importantly…”

A pause.

“What do they want?”

That was the right question.

The question I had learned to ask.

“They want a public statement.”

“About what?”

Daniel opened the document.

“They want you to acknowledge that the conflict was caused by misunderstandings between families.”

I laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

They did not want forgiveness.

They wanted history rewritten.

“They want me to say nothing happened.”

“Basically.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had allowed people to rename my pain.

A misunderstanding.

A disagreement.

A family issue.

Anything except what it was.

Betrayal.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“I thought you would say that.”

But there was more.

“Amelia.”

“Yes?”

“The proposal came directly from Cynthia.”

Of course.

I agreed to meet her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I wanted to know why.

We met in the same library where she had once revealed that my future had been discussed like a business contract.

But this time…

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

“You know about the proposal.”

She said.

“Yes.”

“You rejected it.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I expected that.”

I studied her.

“Then why send it?”

She walked toward the window.

“Because I needed to know if there was any part of you left that still wanted peace.”

I almost smiled.

“There is.”

She looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But peace is not pretending nothing happened.”

Cynthia looked down.

“I made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt your parents.”

“Yes.”

Each answer became heavier.

But I did not soften.

Not because I was cruel.

Because I had learned the cost of pretending.

Then Cynthia said something unexpected.

“Preston is not my son anymore.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“He chose you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“He chose the truth.”

She looked away.

“And I cannot forgive him for that.”

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because even now…

She still saw honesty as betrayal.

“Cynthia.”

She turned.

“Your son did not destroy your family.”

I paused.

“Your choices did.”

The words hit her.

Good.

Because sometimes the truth hurts more than revenge.

Then she reached into her bag.

And removed another folder.

I immediately became cautious.

“What is that?”

She placed it on the table.

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“The reason I was desperate.”

I did not touch it.

“Why show me this?”

She looked at me.

“Because I finally realized something.”

A pause.

“You were never the enemy.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were financial reports.

Bank statements.

Internal records.

The Vale family was worse off than anyone knew.

Much worse.

Loans.

Hidden debts.

Failed investments.

The empire was not falling.

It had already fallen.

They were only hiding the collapse.

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell Preston?”

Her expression changed.

“Because I was ashamed.”

That answer surprised me.

Not because it excused her.

It did not.

But because it was the first human thing she had said.

“My entire life, I was told the Vale name was powerful.”

She whispered.

“But I forgot that names do not save people.”

I closed the folder.

“What do you want me to do with this?”

She looked at me.

“Nothing.”

That surprised me.

“I don’t want you to save us.”

A pause.

“I spent years trying to use your strength.”

She swallowed.

“Now I am asking you not to.”

For the first time…

Cynthia Vale was not asking for something.

She was accepting that she had lost.

But then…

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Amelia.”

His voice was urgent.

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“There was a leak.”

My heart tightened.

“What kind of leak?”

“The documents about the Vale family’s financial collapse.”

I looked at Cynthia.

She looked shocked.

“But those documents were private.”

Daniel continued.

“Someone released them publicly.”

I stood.

“Who?”

Silence.

Then:

“We traced the source.”

My stomach dropped.

“It came from an account connected to your company.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Cynthia.

She looked at me.

And for one terrible second…

Everything felt like it was happening again.

A secret.

A betrayal.

A person being blamed.

But this time…

I was different.

I did not panic.

I did not assume.

I did not let fear choose for me.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Find the original source.”

“We’re already working on it.”

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Do not let anyone tell the story before we know the truth.”

I ended the call.

Cynthia looked at me.

“You believe me?”

I studied her carefully.

“I believe facts.”

And that was the difference between the old Amelia and the new one.

The old Amelia trusted words.

The new Amelia trusted evidence.

The investigation began immediately.

And what we discovered next…

Would reveal the final person who had been manipulating everyone from the beginning.

Because the Vale family had secrets.

But someone else had been collecting them.

Waiting.

Planning.

And now…

They had made their move.
