Chapter 2: The Unexpected Guest

Chapter 2: The Unexpected Guest
The ceremony was only minutes away.
A string quartet played softly as waiters carried crystal flutes filled with champagne through the ballroom. Guests admired Juliette's smile, unaware that she kept glancing toward the entrance every few seconds.
She was waiting for one person.
Not because she wanted him there.
Because she feared he might come.
Then the massive oak doors opened.
A woman in a plain navy dress stepped inside.
She appeared to be in her mid-thirties, carrying a weathered leather folder against her chest. Her dark hair was tied back neatly, and there was nothing remarkable about her appearance—except the confidence with which she walked through a room filled with America's elite.
Several security guards intercepted her.
"I'm sorry, ma'am," one said politely. "This is a private event."
The woman nodded.
"I know."
She looked directly at Douglas Mercer.
"I was invited."
Douglas frowned.
"I don't believe we've met."
"My name is Rachel Hayes."
Silence.
"I worked for the Malibu Fire Department's evidence archive."
Juliette's smile disappeared.
Rachel slowly lifted the leather folder.
"I've spent the last three years reviewing sealed files from the retirement home fire that killed Caroline Mercer."
A nervous murmur spread across the ballroom.
Douglas forced a laugh.
"Surely this isn't the appropriate time."
Rachel's expression never changed.
"No."
"But it's the only time your daughter couldn't hide from the truth."
Juliette stepped forward.
"This woman is delusional."
Rachel calmly removed an old photograph from the folder.
It showed two teenage sisters standing together on a beach.
Caroline smiled with one arm around fifteen-year-old Juliette.
On the back of the photograph, written in faded blue ink, were six words.
If anything happens to me, ask why.
The room fell silent.
Juliette's breathing became uneven.

For the first time that afternoon...
She looked afraid.
