Chapter 2 – The Files They Tried to Erase

Chapter 2 – The Files They Tried to Erase

No one spoke.

Even the orchestra had stopped playing.

The groom's mother stared at the young bridesmaid as though she had seen a ghost.

"What did you just say?"

The bridesmaid slipped her phone back into her pocket.

"I said..."

She held up a faded silver locket.

"...I'm the daughter your family erased."

A murmur rippled through the ballroom.

The Lancaster patriarch, Arthur Lancaster, gripped the edge of his chair so tightly his knuckles turned white.

The groom looked from his grandfather to his mother.

"What is she talking about?"

No one answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A gray-haired attorney entered carrying a sealed leather briefcase.

Behind him walked two forensic accountants and a court-appointed records officer.

"Mrs. Lancaster," the attorney said calmly.

"I represent the trustees of the Lancaster Family Trust."

He placed the briefcase on a nearby table.

"The documents requested twenty-two years ago have now been legally released."

The billionaire's wife took a step backward.

"No..."

The attorney unlocked the case.

Inside were birth records.

Hospital documents.

Adoption files.

Letters bearing Arthur Lancaster's signature.

The attorney lifted the first page.

"The child listed as deceased..."

He looked toward the bridesmaid.

"...was never dead."

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

The bridesmaid's eyes never left the woman who had slapped her.

"You buried the truth."
