Chapter 7 — The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

Chapter 7 — The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

Adrian Cross lived in a house without a name.

No brass plaque.

No security sign.

No driveway visible from the road.

Just a long black gate hidden behind a wall of winter-bare trees.

It was the kind of place a person chose when they didn't want strangers to know they existed.

It was also the kind of place my grandfather had warned me never to visit.

Which was exactly why I went.

By dawn, I was standing outside that gate with Daniel beside me.

Neither of us had slept.

Neither of us trusted the other completely.

But after everything we'd learned, trust had become a luxury.

Daniel looked at the house.

"You really think he's here?"

I held up my mother's note.

"She wanted me to find him."

"That doesn't mean she wanted you to walk in."

"No."

I looked at the gate.

"It means she knew I would."

Daniel sighed.

"You always do that?"

"Do what?"

"Walk toward danger because someone tells you not to."

I looked at him.

"Only when I'm curious."

He almost smiled.

Then the gate opened.

Neither of us had touched it.

A voice came through a hidden speaker.

"Victoria Vale."

I froze.

"Yes?"

"Mr. Cross is expecting you."

Daniel whispered:

"How?"

The speaker clicked off.

The gate opened completely.

I looked at Daniel.

"Stay here."

He shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

"You don't know what's inside."

"Neither do you."

He stepped beside me.

"Let's go."

We walked through.

The House Without a Name

The front door opened before we reached it.

A woman in a dark suit stood waiting.

"Mr. Cross will see you."

"Who are you?"

"My name doesn't matter."

I smiled.

"Everyone's name matters."

She didn't react.

"Follow me."

The house was enormous.

But unlike the Ashford mansion, there was no unnecessary luxury.

No portraits.

No flowers.

No gold.

Everything was dark wood and glass.

Functional.

Cold.

Almost clinical.

We entered a library.

A man stood beside the window.

He was around fifty.

Gray at the temples.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

No visible jewelry.

No expensive watch.

No attempt to impress anyone.

He turned.

And I knew immediately.

He had my eyes.

The same shape.

The same gray-green color.

The same slight crease at the corner when he looked angry.

My heart stopped.

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he said:

"You have your mother's face."

I couldn't speak.

He smiled faintly.

"But your father's eyes."

Daniel looked at me.

I stared at the man.

"Are you Adrian Cross?"

"Yes."

"Are you my biological father?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

The room seemed to disappear.

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Then why?"

He looked confused.

"Why what?"

"Why did everyone lie?"

Adrian sighed.

"Because your grandfather gave them no choice."

"Don't blame him."

"I don't."

He walked toward me.

"I blame myself."

The Truth About My Birth

Adrian sat across from us.

"My relationship with Rebecca began before she met Michael."

I listened.

"We were young."

"How young?"

"Twenty."

"She loved you?"

"Yes."

"And you loved her?"

"More than anything."

"What happened?"

"Elias."

Adrian's face hardened.

"He found out she was pregnant."

I stared at him.

"With me."

He nodded.

"Elias wanted the child."

"Why?"

"Because the Morrow bloodline was obsessed with inheritance."

He leaned back.

"Your grandfather believed blood determined destiny."

"And Michael?"

"Michael didn't care about blood."

Adrian smiled sadly.

"He loved Rebecca."

"So she married him?"

"To protect you."

I looked down.

"Why didn't you stay?"

"Because Elias threatened to kill you."

My head snapped up.

"You left?"

"I disappeared."

"Just like that?"

"No."

His voice became bitter.

"I spent years trying to get back."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because every time I got close, someone died."

I felt a chill.

"Who?"

"People who helped me."

He looked at Daniel.

"Your family wasn't the only family involved."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"The Ashfords were one branch."

"Branch of what?"

"The organization Elias built."

Daniel went pale.

"My family?"

"Your father was not merely a businessman."

Adrian leaned forward.

"He was one of Elias's financial operators."

Daniel stared.

"My father worked for your grandfather?"

"Yes."

"And Michael?"

"He tried to expose them."

I closed my eyes.

The pieces were finally connecting.

The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

Adrian stood.

"Your grandfather believed no one could touch him."

"Because of his money?"

"Money."

He walked toward the window.

"Judges."

"Politicians."

"Police."

"Businessmen."

"People who owed him favors."

"People who owed him fear."

He looked at me.

"He spent decades building a system where consequences couldn't reach him."

"Then why did he disappear?"

"Because he finally made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He trusted the wrong person."

I frowned.

"Who?"

Adrian smiled.

"Your mother."

Rebecca's Double Life

My mother had never been simple.

That was the truth I had been avoiding.

She had lied to me.

She had lied to Michael.

She had lied to Elias.

But Adrian revealed something even stranger.

"Rebecca worked against Elias for years."

"Then why did she help him?"

"To survive."

"She signed his contracts."

"To protect you."

"She disappeared."

"To protect you."

"She let me think she was dead."

"To protect you."

I looked at him.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true."

"Then why did she leave me alone?"

Adrian's face softened.

"Because she believed distance was the only shield she had."

I shook my head.

"It wasn't."

"I know."

"She should have told me."

"Yes."

"She should have trusted me."

"Yes."

I looked at him.

"And you?"

He was quiet.

"Did you trust her?"

"Until the day she betrayed me."

I froze.

"She betrayed you?"

Adrian nodded.

"She gave Elias my location."

"Why?"

"Because he had you."

I stared.

"He had me?"

"Not physically."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"He had your medical records."

"What?"

"He knew your blood type."

He paused.

"He knew your school."

"Your friends."

"Your schedule."

"He knew everything."

I felt sick.

"How?"

"Your mother told him."

I stepped backward.

"So she really did betray us."

Adrian nodded.

"Once."

"Only once?"

He looked at me.

"Once was enough."

The Envelope

Adrian opened a safe.

Inside was a red envelope.

He handed it to me.

"This belonged to your mother."

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of me as a child.

I was sitting on a swing.

Someone stood behind the camera.

The back of the photograph contained handwriting.

I am sorry.

My mother's handwriting.

I turned it over.

Another note.

If she ever finds Adrian, tell her I never stopped loving her.

My eyes filled.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she thought you would come looking."

"I did."

Adrian looked at me.

"That's why she left the note."

The Man at the Door

A crash sounded downstairs.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

"How many people came with you?"

"Just Daniel."

"Where is he?"

"In the hall."

Adrian drew a weapon.

"Stay here."

"No."

He looked at me.

"Victoria."

"I've had enough people telling me to stay behind."

He almost smiled.

"Then stay close."

We left the library.

Daniel was gone.

The front door stood open.

Snow blew inside.

I looked around.

"Daniel?"

No answer.

Adrian crouched.

There were footprints.

Several sets.

"Three men."

I looked at him.

"Where is Daniel?"

Adrian pointed toward the rear hallway.

We ran.

A door slammed.

Then Daniel appeared.

His face was bleeding.

"Victoria!"

I rushed toward him.

"What happened?"

"Three men."

"Where?"

"One escaped."

Adrian checked the hallway.

"The other two?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Adrian looked at me.

"Your grandfather found us."

I felt cold.

"How?"

Daniel pulled something from his pocket.

A small tracking device.

"It was in my jacket."

I stared.

"Who planted it?"

Daniel looked at me.

"My mother."

Margaret's Message

My phone buzzed.

A video message.

Margaret Ashford appeared on the screen.

She looked terrified.

"Victoria, if you're watching this, I'm probably already dead."

Daniel froze.

"Mom."

Margaret continued.

"Don't trust Elias."

I looked at Adrian.

His expression was unreadable.

"Don't trust Alexander either."

My stomach tightened.

"Don't trust anyone who tells you the trust belongs to you."

The video flickered.

Margaret looked behind her.

Someone was coming.

She whispered:

"The frozen account isn't an inheritance."

She swallowed.

"It's a weapon."

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian answered.

"It means Elias never wanted Victoria to own the money."

"Then what does he want?"

Adrian looked at me.

"He wants her to activate it."

"Why?"

"Because the moment she does..."

He paused.

"...every person connected to the money becomes legally exposed."

Daniel frowned.

"Then why would he want that?"

Adrian's face became grim.

"Because he's one of them."

The Real Purpose of the Trust

Adrian explained everything.

The original Vale trust wasn't simply an inheritance.

It was an evidence vault.

For decades, Elias had used legitimate companies to move illegal money.

Every transaction had been recorded.

Every bribe.

Every payoff.

Every secret account.

Every politician.

Every judge.

Every criminal organization.

The trust contained it all.

Michael had discovered the records.

He wanted to expose Elias.

Elias wanted to destroy the records.

But before he could...

Michael created a failsafe.

If anything happened to him, the records would become accessible to his heir.

The problem was that the heir was me.

And I had been a child.

"So Elias needed to control me."

Adrian nodded.

"Exactly."

"Why not kill me?"

"Because the trust would automatically release."

I understood.

"He needed me alive."

"Yes."

"And unaware."

"Yes."

"So the lies..."

"Kept you safe."

I stared at the floor.

"Until now."

Adrian nodded.

"Until now."

The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

My phone rang.

Elias.

I answered.

"Where are you?"

"With Adrian."

Silence.

Then a soft laugh.

"So you found him."

"Yes."

"Good."

"Why aren't you angry?"

"Because I wanted you to."

"What?"

"Find him."

I froze.

"You knew?"

"I arranged it."

Adrian's face changed.

I put the phone on speaker.

Elias continued.

"You needed to hear the truth from someone."

"You could have told me."

"You wouldn't have believed me."

"Maybe not."

"Now you will."

I looked at Adrian.

"What do you want?"

"Come home."

"No."

"I didn't ask."

"Then you don't understand."

Elias's voice became cold.

"Victoria."

"What?"

"The frozen account has been activated."

My heart stopped.

"I didn't activate it."

"Exactly."

I looked at Adrian.

He went pale.

Elias continued.

"Someone else did."

"Who?"

"Your mother."

I felt sick.

"Where is she?"

"That's the question."

The call ended.

Adrian grabbed his coat.

"We have to move."

"Why?"

"Because if Rebecca activated the trust..."

He looked at me.

"She knew exactly what was inside it."

"Which means?"

Adrian's expression hardened.

"She may have decided to stop protecting you."

The Bank

We arrived at the bank thirty minutes later.

Police cars surrounded the building.

Reporters were everywhere.

The doors were locked.

Daniel stared at the chaos.

"What's happening?"

Adrian checked his phone.

"The account released."

"To whom?"

He showed me the screen.

The beneficiary name had changed.

I stared.

It wasn't my name.

It wasn't Elias.

It wasn't the foundation.

It was:

ADRIAN CROSS.

I looked at him.

"You received the money."

He stared at the screen.

"No."

The bank's chief security officer ran toward us.

"Mr. Cross."

Adrian turned.

"The transfer was completed."

"How much?"

"Four billion, one hundred and twelve million."

Daniel stared.

"That's everything."

"No."

The officer shook his head.

"There's more."

He handed Adrian a document.

"One additional instruction."

Adrian read it.

His expression changed.

"What?"

I asked.

He handed it to me.

The instruction was short.

TRANSFER ALL FUNDS TO VICTORIA VALE UPON THE DEATH OF ADRIAN CROSS.

I looked at him.

"That's why."

"Why what?"

"You were never supposed to own it."

I looked toward the bank.

"You're the lock."

Adrian nodded.

"And you're the key."

The Shot

A gunshot cracked through the street.

Adrian shoved me down.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

People screamed.

Police rushed toward the sound.

Adrian staggered.

I looked at him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

"Adrian!"

He collapsed.

I caught him.

"Stay with me."

His eyes remained open.

"Victoria."

"Yes?"

"Listen."

He struggled to breathe.

"The man who shot me..."

He looked toward the crowd.

"...isn't working for Elias."

"Who is he?"

Adrian grabbed my wrist.

"Your grandfather isn't the enemy."

I froze.

"Then who?"

His eyes closed.

"The man behind Elias."

I stared at him.

"Who is behind him?"

Adrian tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

His hand loosened.

Then he whispered one final word.

"Daniel."

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing twenty feet away.

His face was pale.

His hands were covered in blood.

But there was something else in his expression.

Fear.

Not of Adrian.

Not of the police.

Of what I was about to discover.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"I didn't do it."

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

YOUR FIANCÉ IS LYING.

Another message followed.

AND HE HAS BEEN SINCE THE NIGHT YOU MET HIM.

I looked at Daniel.

He took one step toward me.

"Victoria..."

I stepped back.

For the first time, I wasn't sure who I was looking at.

The man who had confessed his family's crimes.

The man who had stood beside me.

The man who had promised to help me.

Or the man who had just been named by a dying stranger.

Then a third message appeared.

ASK HIM ABOUT THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER DISAPPEARED.

Daniel stopped.

His face changed.

May you like

And I knew, before he said a single word...

that he remembered something he had spent his entire life trying to forget.
