CHAPTER 1: THE GIFT THAT DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 1: THE GIFT THAT DISAPPEARED

The little girl waited all afternoon.

She had wrapped the gift herself—crooked tape, uneven paper, but made with care that only a child can give without hesitation.

She left it on the kitchen counter with a note:

“For Mom. I love you.”

When she came back later, it was gone.

No thank you.

No mention.

Just emptiness where hope had been.

That evening, her stepmother was calm as always—perfect hair, soft voice, effortless control of every room she entered.

“Oh that?” she said lightly when asked. “I threw it away. It was just junk.”

The girl didn’t cry immediately.

She looked confused first.

As if she was still trying to understand how love could become “junk” in someone else’s hands.

Her father said nothing that night.

But something inside him stopped moving the way it used to.
