Chapter 4 – A Smile Worth Saving
Six weeks later...
I almost didn't recognize Toby when he returned for a follow-up visit.
The swelling was gone.
The bruised color had faded.
He smiled shyly as he showed me the superhero toothbrush he had picked out himself.
"It tastes like bubble gum," he said proudly.
Dr. Patel laughed.
"That's an excellent choice."
Toby's mother thanked the staff before they left.
"I didn't understand how serious it was," she admitted quietly.
"I won't ignore it again."
None of us celebrated that she had made a mistake.
We celebrated that Toby had recovered.
As they walked toward the exit, Toby turned and waved.
"Bye, Nurse!"
I waved back.
Working in an emergency department often means meeting families on the hardest day of their lives.
Sometimes a complaint that sounds simple can hide something much more serious.
And sometimes, the most important thing a healthcare professional can do is trust their training, look carefully, and never dismiss a child who says,
"It hurts."
