CHAPTER 4 — What Was Taken

CHAPTER 4 — What Was Taken
Later that night, in a quiet hospital office, sealed records were pulled from archives that should never have been reopened.
Names matched.
Signatures resurfaced.
A missing infant file reactivated after twelve years of silence.
And one truth became unavoidable:
Eli hadn’t been abandoned.
He had been taken.
Legally.
Quietly.
Under pressure from people who wanted him erased before anyone asked questions.
Eliza sat in the chair staring at the documents, her hands shaking.
Across from her, Eli slept under a blanket, finally warm.
A lawyer spoke softly:
“If this goes public… it won’t just be a family matter. It’ll reach the hospital board. Maybe even criminal charges.”
Eliza nodded slowly.
But she didn’t look away from the boy.
“Then let it reach them,” she said.
Because for the first time in years, she understood something simple.
Wealth could hide truth.
But it couldn’t undo it.
And it couldn’t take him from her again.
Not now.
Not ever.
ENDING
When Eli woke up the next morning, the first thing he saw was her sitting beside him.
Not a stranger anymore.
Not a name on a photo.
But the beginning of something real.
She smiled gently.
“Good morning,” she said.
And Eli, after a long silence, whispered the only question that mattered:
“Are you staying?”
Eliza took his hand.
May you like
“Yes,” she said.
“I already am.”
