PART 3

PART 3
The woman with the hose finally stepped forward.
“You’re making a mistake,” she snapped. “She’s unstable. She needs structure. She needs discipline—”
The man’s head turned slowly.
And this time, his voice was sharp.
“No,” he said. “She needs care. Something she hasn’t had here.”
The girl flinched again at the tone—but not from him.
From memory.
He noticed instantly and softened his voice again, like flipping a switch.
“Hey,” he said gently, turning back to her. “Look at me. You’re safe.”
Her eyes flicked up.
“Safe?” she repeated, like it was a foreign word.
“Yes,” he said. “With me.”
The wind moved through the driveway.
The hose dripped quietly beside the woman’s shoes.
The man reached slowly—not touching her yet.
Just offering his hand.
“You don’t have to prove anything to stand,” he said. “You just have to try when you’re ready.”
The girl stared at his hand for a long time.
Then, trembling, she lifted her own.
And placed it in his.
Not because she was strong enough.

But because, for the first time…
she believed she might not be alone when she fell.
