Chapter 2: The Place Behind the Silence

Chapter 2: The Place Behind the Silence
The back of Chloe’s apartment wasn’t just cold—it was wrong.
The hallway leading to the small utility door at the end felt sealed off from the rest of the building, like air didn’t circulate there properly.
I noticed it immediately.
Dale followed behind me reluctantly. “There’s nothing back there except storage,” he muttered. “Maintenance access.”
But I had already seen the faint outline in the carpet.
Foot traffic. Repeated. Heavy.
Not Chloe’s light, hurried steps.
Something dragged.
I stopped at the utility door.
It was locked.
Dale exhaled sharply. “See? Nothing.”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I knelt and ran my fingers along the bottom edge of the doorframe.
A faint draft.
Cold air… coming through.
Not from this room.
From below.
I stood slowly. “There’s a basement access behind this wall.”
Dale snapped, “That’s sealed. It’s been sealed for years.”
“Then why is there airflow?”
He didn’t answer.
Behind us, Mia appeared at the end of the hallway, still holding Sam’s hand. Caleb had forced himself to his feet, clinging to her coat.
“I heard something down there,” she whispered.
Dale immediately shook his head. “No. Absolutely not. You’re not taking kids into a maintenance area.”
I turned on him.
“You don’t get a vote.”
For the first time, something flickered in his expression—fear, real and unfiltered.
Because now he understood something had shifted.
Not suspicion.
Direction.
I pressed my shoulder against the utility door.
It gave slightly.
Not locked.
Just… held.
Like someone wanted it to look closed, not be closed.
A single shove opened it fully.
May you like
Darkness waited on the other side.
And a staircase going down.
