Chapter 1: The Woman at the Window

Elena stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline.

Behind her, Damian's phone continued to ring.

His chief financial officer.

The board chairman.

Three banks.

He answered the first call.

"There has to be some mistake."

The voice on the other end was unusually formal.

"There isn't."

"The financing agreement contains a controlling-rights clause."

"It became effective the moment the majority shareholder exercised her authority."

Damian slowly turned toward Elena.

"Majority... shareholder?"

She faced him calmly.

"My grandfather founded Moretti Capital."

"My father expanded it."

"When he retired, his voting shares were placed in a family trust."

She paused.

"I've been the controlling beneficiary for six years."

Veronica stared in disbelief.

"But everyone said you were only involved in charity work."

Elena smiled faintly.

"I preferred that people underestimate me."
