CHAPTER 2 — THE KING ARRIVES

CHAPTER 2 — THE KING ARRIVES

For the first time in twenty years...

Grayson Langford felt fear.

Not uncertainty.

Not irritation.

Fear.

The shattered front doors still trembled against the marble walls.

Outside, black SUVs stretched down the circular driveway like an endless procession.

One by one...

Men in tailored black suits stepped inside.

No raised voices.

No drawn weapons.

They didn't need either.

Their presence alone emptied the room of courage.

The string quartet stopped playing.

Three hundred guests stood frozen.

Senators.

Federal judges.

Investment bankers.

Men who controlled elections.

Women who sat on the boards of the nation's largest charities.

Every one of them recognized the man who entered last.

Dominic Kane.

His charcoal overcoat was still wet from the rain.

Silver streaked the dark hair at his temples.

His expression revealed nothing.

But his eyes...

His eyes swept across the ballroom with terrifying precision.

No greeting.

No apology.

No hesitation.

He walked straight through the crowd.

The guests moved aside instinctively.

Like water parting before a ship.

No one wanted to stand in his path.

Grayson forced a smile.

"Dominic."

"What an unexpected surprise."

No response.

Dominic kept walking.

Past Grayson.

Past Celeste.

Past Paige.

Toward the grand staircase.

One of Grayson's security guards stepped forward.

"I'm sorry, sir, this area is—"

He never finished.

One glance from Dominic's chief of security was enough.

The guard stepped aside.

Without another word.

Grayson's smile disappeared.

"You can't simply walk into my home."

Dominic stopped.

Slowly...

He turned.

His voice remained calm.

"I already did."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Then he continued.

"I came for Harper."

Grayson's jaw tightened.

"My daughter is emotionally unstable."

"She attacked my wife."

"My younger daughter tried to stop her."

Several guests nodded awkwardly.

They wanted to believe him.

It was easier.

Safer.

Dominic looked around the ballroom.

"I wonder..."

His gaze settled on the orchestra.

"...if everyone here would enjoy hearing another version."

Nobody breathed.

Then Dominic raised one hand.

A technician rolled a small equipment case into the foyer.

Grayson's face changed instantly.

"What is that?"

Dominic answered without looking at him.

"The truth."

The technician connected a cable to Ravenshore's central sound system.

Every speaker in the mansion crackled.

From the ballroom...

To the dining hall...

To the library upstairs.

Then a familiar voice echoed through the house.

Harper's voice.

Weak.

Shaking.

"Mr. Kane... can you come get me?"

Grayson went completely still.

The recording continued.

Every word.

Every scream.

Every crash against the library door.

Every threat.

"Open the door, Harper..."

Every guest heard it.

Then came Grayson's voice.

Cold.

Cruel.

"Who did you call?"

Another crash.

Then Harper's terrified whisper.

"He's going to kill me."

Finally...

Dominic's voice.

Calm enough to chill the room.

"Five minutes, Harper."

Silence.

No one moved.

No one dared.

Because the mansion itself had become the witness.

And every lie Grayson Langford had built over twenty years was collapsing through its own speakers.

Across the ballroom, Celeste's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the marble floor.

Nobody even looked at it.

All eyes remained fixed on Grayson.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

The most powerful man in Greenwich had nowhere left to hide.
