Chapter 1 — The Warning Mia Screamed

Chapter 1 — The Warning Mia Screamed
Mia's scream cut through the mansion like a blade.
“DON'T TOUCH MY MOM!”
Michael stopped.
The heavy iron fire poker remained raised in his hand.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The grandfather clock in the foyer ticked once.
Twice.
Three times.
Michael slowly turned toward the staircase.
Seven-year-old Mia stood there barefoot, tears streaking her cheeks.
But she wasn't looking at the poker anymore.
She was looking at the front door.
Michael followed her gaze.
Nothing.
The gates outside were still closed.
The security lights were on.
The guards were supposed to be watching every entrance.
Yet Michael's face had suddenly lost its color.
Because he knew who Mia was talking about.
And there was only one man who could make Michael afraid enough to forget about everything else.
Then the doorbell rang.
Once.
Michael's fingers tightened around the poker.
The bell rang again.
Elena stood frozen beside the shattered cabinet.
Michael whispered:
“No.”
Mia wiped her tears.
“Yes.”
The door opened.
And the man Michael had spent twelve years trying to destroy walked into the mansion.
The Man at the Door
He was tall.
Older than Michael.
His dark coat was soaked from the rain.
Two security guards lay unconscious outside the entrance.
Not dead.
But completely unable to stop him.
The man removed his gloves.
His eyes went immediately to Victoria lying among the broken glass.
Then to Mia.
Finally, he looked at Michael.
“You.”
Michael swallowed.
“Daniel.”
Daniel said nothing.
He simply stared.
Michael slowly lowered the fire poker.
“You can't be here.”
Daniel took another step.
“I know.”
Michael's voice hardened.
“This property is private.”
“I know.”
“You're trespassing.”
Daniel glanced toward the shattered glass.
“Call the police.”
Michael's expression changed.
Daniel continued:
“Go ahead.”
Michael didn't move.
Because Daniel knew.
He knew exactly what had happened.
And worse—
he had come prepared.
Elena's Choice
Elena finally moved.
She rushed toward Victoria.
“Mrs. Carter?”
Victoria didn't respond.
Elena checked her breathing.
Weak.
But present.
“She's alive!”
Michael's head snapped toward her.
“What?”
Elena looked up.
“She is breathing.”
Michael took a step forward.
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“Don't.”
Michael stared at him.
“This is my wife.”
Daniel's voice was cold.
“Not anymore.”
Michael laughed nervously.
“You have no idea what happened here.”
“I know exactly what happened.”
“How?”
Daniel reached inside his coat.
Michael instinctively stepped backward.
Daniel pulled out a small device.
A phone.
On its screen was a live recording.
The foyer appeared.
Michael standing over Victoria.
The fire poker in his hand.
Mia screaming.
Elena hiding in the shadows.
Michael's face drained of color.
“No.”
Daniel pressed play.
Michael heard his own voice.
“You should have listened to me, Victoria.”
The recording continued.
Then came the sound of the glass breaking.
Michael stared at the phone.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel looked at Mia.
“She sent it.”
Michael turned.
“What?”
Mia stood silently on the staircase.
Daniel smiled at her.
“You did exactly what I told you.”
Mia nodded.
Michael's eyes widened.
“You knew him?”
Mia whispered:
“For a long time.”
The Little Recorder
Michael looked at his daughter.
“You've been talking to him?”
Mia didn't answer.
Michael stepped toward her.
Daniel blocked his path.
“You stay where you are.”
Michael's anger returned.
“You've been manipulating my daughter?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Mia.
“She came to me.”
Michael laughed.
“She is seven.”
“And she knows more about you than you think.”
Mia slowly descended the staircase.
Elena watched her carefully.
The little girl stopped beside her mother.
She looked down at Victoria.
Then she looked at Michael.
“You told me nobody would believe me.”
Michael's expression changed.
“You told me cameras were turned off.”
He stared.
“You told me Elena couldn't hear anything.”
Elena's eyes widened.
Mia reached into the pocket of her little cardigan.
She pulled out a tiny recorder.
Michael stared at it.
“No.”
Mia held it tightly.
“I recorded everything.”
The First Recording
Daniel connected the recorder to his phone.
A child's voice filled the foyer.
Mia.
“Daddy, why is Mommy crying?”
Michael's voice answered.
“Go upstairs.”
“Is Mommy hurt?”
“I said go upstairs.”
The recording continued.
Victoria's voice could be heard.
“Michael, please.”
Then a crash.
A scream.
The sound of glass breaking.
Elena covered her mouth.
She had heard the scene only minutes ago.
But hearing it recorded made it worse.
It was proof.
Michael stared at the device.
“That doesn't prove anything.”
Daniel looked at him.
“It proves you were there.”
“I didn't kill her.”
“No.”
Daniel nodded toward Victoria.
“Fortunately, you failed.”
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel's expression became frighteningly calm.
“You weren't supposed to stop when she fell.”
Michael said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“You were supposed to make sure she couldn't get up.”
Elena looked at Michael.
The truth was suddenly obvious.
This hadn't been an accident.
It had been planned.
The Second Recording
Mia handed Daniel another device.
“This one.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
He pressed play.
Michael's voice filled the room.
“Tomorrow morning, everyone will believe she fell.”
Another man's voice answered.
“And the girl?”
Michael replied:
“Mia will say nothing.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
Silence.
Michael's face became expressionless.
Then he smiled.
“You've been recording me.”
Mia nodded.
“For weeks.”
Michael stared at her.
“Why?”
Mia looked at her mother.
“Because Mommy told me to.”
Michael's smile disappeared.
“She knew?”
Mia nodded.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to give the recordings to Daniel.”
Michael slowly looked at Victoria.
Her eyes remained closed.
But one of her fingers moved.
Michael saw it.
So did Elena.
“She heard us,” Elena whispered.
Daniel immediately crouched beside Victoria.
“Victoria?”
Her eyelids trembled.
“Daniel…”
Her voice was barely audible.
Michael took a step backward.
Victoria was alive.
And awake.
Victoria's Last Warning
Daniel leaned closer.
“Don't speak.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I have to.”
Her eyes moved toward Michael.
Then toward Mia.
“He knows.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Victoria tried to breathe.
“He knows about the account.”
Michael froze.
Daniel looked at him.
“What account?”
Victoria's voice became weaker.
“The one… under Mia's name.”
Michael's expression changed completely.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew?”
Michael said nothing.
Victoria closed her eyes.
“He can't get it.”
Michael suddenly lunged toward her.
Daniel grabbed him.
Michael fought violently.
“Let me go!”
Daniel forced him backward.
“You're not touching her.”
Michael screamed:
“You don't understand!”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then explain.”
Michael stopped struggling.
His face changed.
The arrogance disappeared.
Fear replaced it.
“The account isn't mine.”
Daniel asked:
“Whose is it?”
Michael looked at Mia.
“Her mother's.”
The Account
Police sirens finally appeared in the distance.
Michael heard them.
He looked toward the windows.
Then toward the doors.
His entire plan was collapsing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is in that account?”
Michael didn't answer.
“Money?”
Nothing.
“Evidence?”
Still nothing.
“Something else?”
Michael finally whispered:
“Names.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Whose names?”
Michael looked at him.
“Everyone who helped build the empire.”
Daniel went silent.
Michael continued:
“Politicians.”
“Judges.”
“Bankers.”
“Police officers.”
“People who can make evidence disappear.”
Daniel understood.
This wasn't merely about a murder.
Victoria had discovered something much larger.
Something that could destroy powerful people.
And Michael had tried to kill her before she could expose it.
The Mansion Turns Against Him
Police surrounded the property.
Red and blue lights flashed across the marble walls.
Officers entered with weapons drawn.
“DROP THE FIRE POKER!”
Michael looked down.
He had forgotten he was still holding it.
Slowly, he placed it on the floor.
He raised his hands.
“I'm innocent.”
Mia looked at him.
“No.”
Michael stared at his daughter.
“Mia.”
She shook her head.
“You hurt Mommy.”
“I didn't mean to.”
“You planned it.”
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“Who told you that?”
Mia pointed toward the recorder.
“You did.”
The officers moved toward him.
Michael was handcuffed.
But as they led him away, he stopped beside Mia.
“You don't know what you've done.”
Mia stared at him.
“I know.”
“You've destroyed your family.”
Mia's voice trembled.
“No.”
She looked at Victoria.
“You did.”
Michael was taken outside.
The mansion doors closed behind him.
For the first time in years, Mia felt the house become quiet.
The File
Hours later, Victoria was taken to the hospital.
Her injuries were serious, but she was expected to survive.
Mia refused to leave her side.
Elena sat beside the hospital bed.
Daniel stood near the window.
Victoria finally opened her eyes.
“Where's Michael?”
“In custody.”
She closed her eyes.
“Good.”
Daniel turned.
“You need to tell me everything.”
Victoria looked at him.
“I will.”
“What is the account?”
“A safeguard.”
“For what?”
“If Michael ever tried to kill me…”
She looked toward Mia.
“…the account would automatically release the evidence.”
Daniel stared.
“Automatically?”
Victoria nodded.
“Mia's recordings were only the beginning.”
Daniel looked at the child.
“What else do you have?”
Mia reached into her backpack.
She pulled out a small red flash drive.
Daniel stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Mia answered:
“Daddy's office.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“That's it.”
Daniel took the drive.
“What is on it?”
Victoria whispered:
“Everything.”
The Last Recording
Before anyone could examine the drive, Mia spoke.
“There is one more recording.”
Daniel turned.
“Where?”
“At home.”
“Where in the house?”
Mia looked frightened.
“In Daddy's study.”
“What did you record?”
She swallowed.
“Something he said when he thought nobody was listening.”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“What did he say?”
Mia whispered:
“He said Mommy wasn't his first wife.”
Victoria's eyes opened.
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that true?”
Victoria didn't answer.
Mia continued:
“He said the woman before Mommy…”
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
“She disappeared.”
The room became silent.
Victoria finally whispered:
“Her name was Catherine.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where is she?”
Victoria looked toward the ceiling.
“I don't know.”
Mia squeezed Elena's hand.
“But Daddy does.”
The Hidden Door
That same night, investigators returned to the mansion.
They searched Michael's study.
Drawers.
Computers.
Safes.
Nothing.
Then Mia walked into the room.
She stood beside a large bookshelf.
“Move this.”
An officer looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Daddy told me never to touch it.”
They moved the bookshelf.
Behind it was a narrow door.
The door opened.
Inside was a hidden room.
A desk.
A filing cabinet.
Several hard drives.
And photographs.
Dozens of them.
Women.
Men.
Families.
Dates written beneath each photograph.
One photograph showed Victoria.
Another showed Elena.
And another—
showed Mia.
Taken when she was only three years old.
Daniel stared.
“Who took these?”
Mia whispered:
“Daddy.”
At the bottom of the cabinet was one final photograph.
A woman named Catherine.
The date beneath it was twelve years old.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten message.
SHE KNOWS WHERE THE MONEY IS.
Then another line.
FIND HER BEFORE VICTORIA DOES.
Daniel looked at Mia.
“What does that mean?”
Mia shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then a phone rang inside the hidden room.
Everyone froze.
The phone had no visible connection.
No number appeared.
It rang again.
Daniel answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Michael has been arrested.”
Daniel said nothing.
The woman continued:
“But you still haven't found me.”
Daniel looked at Catherine's photograph.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“I'm the woman Michael thought he killed.”
The line went dead.
Mia stared at Daniel.
Elena whispered:
“Catherine.”
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
The murder Michael thought he had planned perfectly was only the beginning.
Because Victoria was alive.
Mia had recorded everything.
And somewhere in the darkness, the woman Michael had tried to erase from history had just announced that she was coming back.

This time, she wasn't coming for revenge.
She was coming with the truth.
