Chapter 2 – The Doors Were Never for Them

The echo of the final steel barrier faded.

No one moved.

The ballroom, moments earlier filled with music and laughter, had become eerily silent.

The man who had struck me—Ethan Blackwood—looked from one sealed exit to another.

"This is insane."

He forced a laugh that convinced no one.

"You can't imprison five hundred people."

"I didn't."

I folded my hands calmly.

"I secured a crime scene."

His smile disappeared.

Before he could speak again, every chandelier dimmed.

Large display screens hidden behind decorative panels flickered to life.

The ballroom's own security cameras filled every screen.

Multiple angles.

Crystal-clear footage.

There was Ethan.

Shoving me into the marble wall.

Grabbing my wrist.

Striking me across the face.

No edits.

No missing seconds.

Just the truth.

A gasp swept through the crowd.

One of Ethan's closest friends quietly stepped away from him.

Another lowered his champagne glass.

The silence that followed was louder than any accusation.

The ballroom doors opened from the inside.

This time, they were unlocked by security.

Not for the guests.

For my father's private security team.

More than twenty officers entered in coordinated formation.

Behind them walked my father.

Alexander Hart.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't hurry.

He simply walked toward me.

His eyes settled on the bruise beneath mine.

"What happened?"

"I was assaulted."

He nodded once.

Then turned to Ethan.

"Did you touch my daughter?"

Ethan looked around desperately.

"It was an accident."

My father glanced toward the giant screens.

"The cameras appear to disagree."

For the first time in his life...

Ethan understood that influence ends where evidence begins.
