Chapter 2: The Recording They Never Expected
The room froze.
Rebecca hadn't started the video by accident.
She had turned the volume all the way up.
A familiar voice echoed through Room 614.
"I don't care how much it costs. The mother never leaves with that baby."
The man standing beside Ethan's bassinet stiffened.
The nurse's hand stopped in midair.
Rebecca squeezed her mother's hand beneath the bed.
"Keep playing," she whispered.
The recording continued.
"If anyone asks questions, tell them there was a paperwork error. Once the child is gone, there won't be anything left to prove."
The voice was unmistakable.
Dr. Malcolm Reeves.
The hospital's chief administrator.
Outside the room, hurried footsteps approached.
Someone had already heard the recording.
The nurse panicked.
"Turn that off!"
Instead, Rebecca crawled halfway out from beneath the bed.
Holding the phone high, she shouted,
"Help! They're trying to take my baby brother!"
Her cry echoed down the maternity ward.
Doors flew open.
Nurses.
Doctors.
Patients' families.
Everyone turned toward Room 614.
The man bolted for the hallway.
