CHAPTER 5: The Mistress Who Stole My Crown

CHAPTER 5: The Mistress Who Stole My Crown

Vivian Laurent believed she had won.

That was the first mistake.

People like Vivian always misunderstood the difference between entering a palace and owning a kingdom.

She walked through the doors of Aurora Grand Resort wearing my coat.

My emerald necklace rested against her skin.

She held Julian's arm.

She smiled at the employees.

She looked at the guests.

And in her mind, she had already rewritten the story.

Elena was gone.

Vivian was the new woman beside Julian Cross.

The new queen.

The new face of the empire.

But Vivian didn't understand something.

A crown is not valuable because someone places it on your head.

It is valuable because someone built the kingdom beneath it.

And she had no idea whose kingdom she was standing in.

The morning after Julian threw me out, Vivian woke up in the penthouse believing she was living a dream.

The view alone was enough to make anyone feel powerful.

Floor-to-ceiling windows.

A private terrace overlooking the city.

Designer furniture.

Rare artwork.

Everything expensive.

Everything impressive.

She walked through the rooms slowly.

Touching things.

Admiring things.

Claiming things.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Julian's voice came from behind her.

She turned and smiled.

"I knew this life was meant for me."

Julian poured himself coffee.

He smiled.

But it wasn't the smile of a man in love.

It was the smile of a man trying to convince himself everything was under control.

"You deserve it."

Vivian walked toward him.

"More than her?"

Julian paused.

Only for a second.

But Vivian noticed.

She was observant.

That was one of the reasons Julian liked her.

She understood appearances.

She understood influence.

She understood how the world worked.

At least...

She thought she did.

"Of course."

He answered.

"Elena never understood this world."

Vivian smiled.

"I did."

Julian looked at her.

"Yes."

A pause.

"You do."

Neither of them noticed the irony.

At 9:00 a.m., Vivian arrived at Aurora Grand Resort.

Not as a guest.

Not as a visitor.

As someone who believed she belonged.

The staff immediately recognized her.

Not because they respected her.

Because they had seen her beside Julian the night before.

And because people always pay attention when powerful people create scandals.

She walked into the lobby.

The same lobby where Elena had been humiliated.

She looked around.

"I think this place needs some changes."

The general manager, Thomas Reed, stood beside her.

A polite smile.

"What kind of changes, Ms. Laurent?"

Vivian looked around.

"More of my style."

Thomas remained silent.

"More modern."

She touched the marble counter.

"Less... Elena."

The room became quiet.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone knew whose designs surrounded them.

Whose ideas created the atmosphere.

Whose hands had touched every detail.

But nobody spoke.

Not yet.

Vivian continued walking.

"The marketing strategy needs adjustment."

She turned toward Thomas.

"Julian told me I would be involved in the brand direction."

Thomas nodded carefully.

"Did Mr. Cross make that official?"

Her smile faded slightly.

"He doesn't need paperwork."

Interesting.

Thomas thought.

Because Elena always had paperwork.

Elena believed words mattered.

Promises mattered.

Details mattered.

That was why the company survived.

Vivian believed confidence was enough.

She was about to learn otherwise.

At noon, Vivian received her first surprise.

Her credit card was declined.

Not at a random store.

At a luxury boutique.

The same boutique where Julian had told her she could buy anything she wanted.

She stared at the machine.

"Try again."

The employee did.

Declined.

Vivian laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

She called Julian.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A strange feeling entered her chest.

Not fear.

Not yet.

Confusion.

Because Julian Cross was supposed to control everything.

Meanwhile, Julian was discovering the same problem.

His assistant entered the office carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Cross."

Julian looked up.

"What?"

"There are issues with the accounts."

He frowned.

"What kind of issues?"

"Several accounts require additional authorization."

"Whose?"

The assistant hesitated.

"Mrs. Hartwell."

Silence.

Julian's expression darkened.

"Remove that."

The assistant swallowed.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"We can't."

The room became still.

Julian stood.

"What do you mean you can't?"

"The system recognizes Hartwell Trust authority."

He stared.

"I am the CEO."

The assistant looked down.

"Yes, sir."

A pause.

"But the assets are not owned by Cross International."

Those words felt like a knife.

Not owned.

Julian hated those words.

Because they reminded him of the truth.

By afternoon, Vivian finally reached Julian.

"What's happening?"

Her voice was sharp.

Julian looked irritated.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

She laughed.

"My card was declined."

"Temporary issue."

"Julian."

She lowered her voice.

"I need access."

He looked at her.

"Access to what?"

The question surprised her.

"Your accounts."

He stared.

"My accounts?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"You said everything would change."

Julian's face hardened.

"It will."

"But when?"

He didn't answer.

And for the first time, Vivian saw something she had never seen before.

Uncertainty.

That evening, she confronted him.

"You lied to me."

Julian looked up.

"What?"

"You made me believe you owned everything."

His expression changed.

"I do own it."

"Do you?"

The question hit harder than she expected.

Because it was the same question Elena had asked.

Julian stood.

"You don't understand."

Vivian laughed.

"Apparently nobody understands."

She walked closer.

"Elena understood."

His face changed.

"Don't mention her."

"Why?"

Vivian smiled bitterly.

"Because she knew something I didn't?"

Silence.

That silence answered her.

Across the city, I watched the news.

Not because I cared about Julian.

Because I needed to understand the damage.

The headlines were already changing.

CROSS INTERNATIONAL FACES OWNERSHIP REVIEW

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED

QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT COMPANY STRUCTURE

My father sat beside me.

"You feel anything?"

I looked at the screen.

Julian's face appeared.

The confident CEO.

The man everyone admired.

The man who believed he was untouchable.

"I feel tired."

My father nodded.

"Good."

I looked at him.

"Good?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because anger keeps you connected."

He looked at me.

"Indifference means you are free."

That night, I returned to Aurora Grand Resort.

Not as Julian's wife.

Not secretly.

Not as someone standing behind him.

I entered through the main doors.

The same doors I had been dragged through.

The same lobby where everyone watched me leave.

This time...

Everyone stood.

The general manager approached.

"Mrs. Hartwell."

I nodded.

"Thomas."

His expression was emotional.

"I apologize."

"For what?"

He looked down.

"For staying silent."

I studied him.

Then said:

"Silence is sometimes fear."

A pause.

"But silence also has consequences."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I walked through the lobby slowly.

Touching nothing.

Changing nothing.

Because I didn't need to prove ownership.

The building itself knew.

The employees knew.

The history knew.

Only Julian had forgotten.

I stopped near the fountain.

The one I designed.

The one Julian once said represented everything we built together.

Now it represented something else.

The moment I stopped giving someone else credit for my own existence.

Later that night, Vivian stood outside the penthouse window.

She watched the city.

The same city she thought she had conquered.

Julian stood behind her.

Neither spoke.

Finally, she asked:

"Who is Elena Hartwell?"

Julian didn't answer.

Because that was the question he had been avoiding.

Not:

What does she own?

Not:

How much power does she have?

But:

Who is the woman I married?

After nine years...

He realized he never truly knew.

Vivian turned around.

"Julian."

He looked at her.

"Did you ever love her?"

The silence was longer than any answer.

And Vivian understood.

She had not stolen Elena's crown.

She had stolen a man's illusion.

A man who had thrown away the only person who knew how to build a kingdom.

At midnight, my father received a message.

The final shareholder protocol had been approved.

The next step would begin at sunrise.

I looked at the document.

The title was simple.

TRANSFER OF CONTROL.

Tomorrow, the world would learn the truth.

Julian Cross was not the owner of the empire.

May you like

He was only the man who had been trusted to protect it.

And he had failed.
