Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Uniform

The ballroom fell silent.

More than three hundred guests turned toward the young woman in the servant's uniform.

Claire lowered her eyes, instinctively stepping back.

"I... I'm fine, sir."

Richard Hawthorne gently stopped her.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"You've been pretending to be fine for twenty-three years."

Everyone exchanged confused glances.

The bride whispered to her mother,

"Why is Mr. Hawthorne protecting a maid?"

Richard slowly removed the white serving apron from Claire's shoulders.

Underneath was a delicate sapphire necklace.

Several elderly guests gasped.

One woman covered her mouth.

"That necklace..."

"It belonged to Evelyn Hawthorne."

Richard nodded.

"My late wife."

He turned to the room.

"This woman is not a servant."

"She is my daughter."

Silence crashed over the ballroom.

Claire looked at him through tears.

Richard continued.

"After my wife died, Claire begged me for one thing."

"She wanted people to see her for who she was—not for my name or my wealth."

"So she accepted a position at our family's charity gala as a volunteer server."

"No one here knew."

"And today..."
