Chapter 2: A Son Learns the Truth

Chapter 2: A Son Learns the Truth

Mariana knew Santiago would never believe a maid's accusations alone.

So she waited.

One Friday evening, Santiago returned home earlier than expected.

Camila was upstairs preparing for a charity gala.

Mariana quietly approached him.

"Sir... I know this could cost me my job."

She handed him the recorder.

"Please... listen before anyone sees us."

Confused, Santiago pressed Play.

The room fell silent.

His wife's voice echoed through the speaker.

"If that old woman doesn't eat, even better."

"She'll stop being a burden sooner."

The color drained from Santiago's face.

He continued listening.

Camila admitted hiding letters.

Canceling medical appointments.

Locking his mother inside her bedroom.

Even adding unnecessary sedatives to keep her quiet.

When the recording ended, Santiago couldn't speak.

Instead, he rushed upstairs.

He unlocked his mother's bedroom himself.

Inside, he found Doña Consuelo lying weakly in bed with an untouched dinner tray beside her.

She slowly opened her eyes.

"Santi..."

For the first time in months, he truly looked at her.

He saw the bruises.

The trembling hands.

May you like

The fear.

And he realized he had failed the woman who had raised him.
