Chapter 6 — The Missing Security File

Chapter 6 — The Missing Security File
The Whitmore mansion had always been a place where secrets disappeared.
Not because there were no records.
Because the right people knew how to make records vanish.
For decades, the family had controlled everything.
The newspapers.
The company reports.
The public image.
Even the stories people told about them.
But Daniel Cruz knew something about powerful people.
They always believed they were smarter than the evidence.
And eventually…
Evidence fought back.
The Empty Space
At 6:30 the next morning, Daniel arrived at the security room before sunrise.
He had barely slept.
The discovery at Margaret’s house had changed the investigation.
This was no longer about a stolen necklace.
No longer about Vanessa framing Emily.
This was about a family secret that had been buried for twenty-five years.
Daniel opened the archive system.
He searched the old security records.
Whitmore Mansion — East Wing
Year: 1998
The files loaded.
Then stopped.
Daniel frowned.
A security archive from that year should have contained thousands of hours of footage.
Instead…
There was one folder.
Empty.
Not deleted.
Not corrupted.
Empty.
Someone had removed the recordings manually.
Daniel leaned closer.
“That’s impossible.”
The system showed something else.
A user login.
A person who accessed the files three months earlier.
The same time Vanessa began investigating Emily.
Daniel wrote down the name.
Richard Whitmore.
Emily’s Decision
When Daniel showed Emily the information, she was not surprised.
That scared him.
“You expected this?”
Emily looked at the empty archive.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I expected someone in that family.”
She had changed.
Three days ago, she had been a housekeeper trying to survive.
Now she was someone searching through the history of one of the most powerful families in the country.
Daniel noticed.
“You could walk away.”
Emily looked at him.
“Could you?”
Daniel said nothing.
Because he knew the answer.
“No.”
“Then neither can I.”
The Deleted Recording
Daniel contacted a former technician who installed the Whitmore security system.
His name was Victor Hale.
Victor arrived that afternoon.
The moment he entered the security room, his expression changed.
“You found it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew?”
Victor hesitated.
“I knew something was wrong.”
Emily stepped forward.
“What happened?”
Victor looked uncomfortable.
“Twenty-five years ago, the security system recorded everything.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“Including what happened to Thomas?”
Victor looked away.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
“Then why is it gone?”
Daniel asked.
Victor swallowed.
“Because someone ordered me to remove it.”
Emily’s voice became quiet.
“Who?”
Victor looked at her.
And answered:
“Your grandfather.”
The Name Nobody Mentioned
Emily froze.
“My grandfather?”
Victor nodded.
“Richard’s father.”
The founder of Whitmore Industries.
The man who built the empire.
The man whose name was still engraved on company buildings.
Emily felt sick.
“So this started before Richard.”
“Yes.”
Victor continued.
“The Whitmore family was protecting something long before Vanessa was born.”
The Last Backup
Victor explained something important.
The original footage had been deleted.
But security systems often created automatic backups.
Hidden backups.
Files nobody knew existed.
Except the person who installed the system.
Victor led them downstairs.
Below the mansion.
To an old maintenance room.
A room that had been locked for years.
Inside was a small server.
Covered in dust.
Victor turned it on.
The screen flickered.
One folder appeared.
THOMAS INCIDENT
Emily grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“That’s it.”
Daniel nodded.
They opened the file.
The video began.
The quality was poor.
Black and white.
Old.
But clear enough.
The footage showed Thomas Whitmore entering the east wing.
He was carrying a folder.
A few minutes later…
Richard entered.
Emily stopped breathing.
The two men argued.
No sound.
Only movement.
Then something happened.
Thomas pointed toward the folder.
Richard looked angry.
Then another person entered.
A woman.
Emily moved closer.
She recognized her.
Vanessa’s mother.
The three stood together.
Then the video cut.
The screen went black.
“No.”
Emily whispered.
Daniel checked the system.
“Why did it stop?”
Victor looked terrified.
“Because someone removed the rest.”
Someone Is Watching
At that exact moment…
A security alert appeared.
Unauthorized access detected.
Daniel immediately checked the location.
Someone was inside the mansion.
The east wing.
The same room.
Emily looked at him.
“Vanessa?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the screen.
The name appeared.
Richard Whitmore.
The Confrontation
They rushed upstairs.
Richard was standing inside the east wing.
Looking at the old server.
“You shouldn’t have found this.”
Emily stared at him.
“Why?”
Richard looked exhausted.
“Because now you know enough to get hurt.”
“You mean hurt like my mother?”
Richard’s face changed.
For the first time…
Emily saw guilt.
Real guilt.
“What happened to her?”
Richard remained silent.
“Tell me!”
His voice finally broke.
“She was trying to expose us.”
Emily felt her heart stop.
“Us?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The Missing Piece
Before Emily could ask more, Daniel’s phone rang.
A message had arrived.
From an unknown number.
A single sentence:
STOP LOOKING FOR THE FOOTAGE.
Below it was an attachment.
A photograph.
The same security room.
Taken minutes earlier.
Showing Daniel, Emily, and Victor inside.
Someone was watching them.
Right now.
Daniel looked around the room.
“Whoever deleted the footage…”
He lowered the phone.
“Knows we found the backup.”
Emily looked toward the dark hallway.
The Whitmore mansion suddenly felt alive.
Like it was watching them.
Like it had been waiting for someone to uncover its secrets.
And now that Emily had opened the door…
May you like
The people who buried the truth for twenty-five years would do anything to close it again.
