Chapter 4: The Gift She Had Always Wanted

Chapter 4: The Gift She Had Always Wanted

One year later...

Daniel no longer worked overseas.

He accepted a position closer to home.

Every evening, he picked Sophie up from school.

Sometimes they painted together.

Sometimes they simply sat on the porch talking about their day.

For her thirteenth birthday, Daniel gave her one final gift.

Not jewelry.

Not expensive electronics.

A large wooden box.

Inside were every letter he had ever written to her.

Beside them were all the letters she had written to him.

This time, they read them together.

No secrets.

No one standing between them.

Sophie smiled through tears.

"This is the best present you've ever given me."

Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"I spent years trying to send you gifts."

"I finally realized..."

"The only thing you ever really wanted..."

"...was your dad."

Sometimes the greatest distance between two people isn't measured in miles.

It's measured in the truths someone else keeps hidden.

And sometimes, the greatest reunion begins with coming home just a little earlier than expected.

The End.
