CHAPTER 1 – THE DOOR THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED

CHAPTER 1 – THE DOOR THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED

Adrian did not speak.

The silence after the cane hit the floor felt heavier than any scream.

The three children stared at him with hollow eyes—eyes that belonged to people much older than their tiny bodies.

One girl instinctively hid behind the older boy.

The youngest child wrapped both arms around himself, trembling violently.

Evelyn slowly stepped backward.

Her elegant dress, perfectly tailored only hours earlier for a charity gala, now looked strangely out of place inside the gray concrete room.

"You weren't supposed to be home."

Her voice remained calm.

Almost amused.

Adrian ignored her.

Instead, he knelt before the children.

"It's alright."

The words sounded weak even to him.

The oldest boy flinched.

Not because Adrian had frightened him...

Because kindness itself frightened him.

"You don't have to be afraid."

No response.

The boy only looked toward Evelyn.

Waiting.

As though every sentence required her permission.

Adrian felt something inside him break.

He removed his jacket and wrapped it around the smallest child.

The boy whispered almost silently,

"Is this... another test?"

Adrian froze.

"What?"

The child swallowed.

"Sometimes she pretends to be nice first."

Evelyn sighed impatiently.

"Adrian, you're misunderstanding everything."

He slowly stood.

"Am I?"

She folded her arms.

"They're difficult children."

"They're orphans."

"They need discipline."

"They're dangerous."

Adrian looked around.

Three frightened children.

No toys.

No windows.

No beds.

Only thin mattresses on the concrete floor.

A surveillance camera watched every movement.

A metal cabinet stood against one wall.

When Adrian opened it...

He wished he hadn't.

Inside were notebooks.

Medical files.

Behavior charts.

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every child had been assigned a number instead of a name.

Punishments had been recorded with clinical precision.

Food withheld.

Isolation.

Cold exposure.

Sleep deprivation.

Every page was written in Evelyn's elegant handwriting.

Not once did she describe them as children.

Only subjects.

Experiments.

Adrian slowly turned another page.

Then another.

His breathing became uneven.

At the back of the cabinet rested a locked steel case.

He forced it open.

Inside were flash drives.

Financial records.

Encrypted contracts.

Payments.

Millions of dollars.

Transferred from shell companies connected to international donors.

One folder carried a title that made his blood freeze.

Project Obedience.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"I hoped you'd never see that."

Adrian looked up.

"What have you done?"

She answered without guilt.

"I perfected control."

That night, Adrian secretly escorted the children into the estate's secure panic room.

He contacted no one.

Not yet.

Because if Evelyn had built something this organized...

Someone else already knew.

May you like

And someone else would soon realize...

their secret had been discovered.
