Chapter 4: A Home That Never Needed Earning
The months that followed were filled with small miracles.
Sophie gained weight.
The dark circles beneath her eyes disappeared.
She laughed more.
She sang while coloring.
She stopped asking permission before opening the refrigerator.
One evening, I found her standing in the kitchen holding an apple.
She looked uncertain.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do I have to do a chore first?"
I smiled gently.
"No."
"What if I make a mess?"
"We'll clean it together."
"What if I spill something?"
"I'll hand you a towel."
"And... I'll still get dinner?"
I knelt in front of her.
"You will always get dinner."
"You will always have a bed."
"You will always be loved."
"Not because of what you do."
"But because you're my daughter."
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
"I like this home better."
"So do I."
Years later, people asked me how I knew when someone wasn't right for our family.
The answer was always the same.
Anyone who makes a child believe that love, food, or safety must be earned...
Doesn't belong in a home with that child.
Because the greatest gift a parent can give isn't a mansion.
It isn't expensive toys.
It isn't perfect floors.
It's creating a place where a child never has to wonder whether they're worthy of being cared for.
And from that day forward, Sophie never again apologized for being hungry.

She simply knew she was home.
