Chapter 8 – The Hidden Phone

Chapter 8 – The Hidden Phone

The Harrison estate had been under police control for nearly seventy-two hours.

Every room had been photographed.

Every document cataloged.

Every hidden compartment opened.

Yet Detective Laura Bennett couldn't shake the feeling that the house was still hiding something.

Years of experience had taught her one lesson she never ignored.

People who carefully planned crimes almost always overlooked one small detail.

And sometimes...

One forgotten detail unraveled everything.

Upstairs, sunlight filtered through the curtains of Eleanor Harrison's bedroom.

For the first time in months, the room looked peaceful.

The wheelchair was gone.

The bed had been stripped for forensic testing.

Evidence tags marked drawers and cabinets that had already been examined.

Olivia stood quietly in the doorway.

"I'd like to pack a few things for Eleanor."

Laura nodded.

"An officer will stay with you."

Olivia smiled gratefully.

"Thank you."

As she folded Eleanor's favorite blue cardigan into a suitcase, memories flooded back.

The elderly woman had always insisted on making the bed every morning.

Even when arthritis made it painful.

Even when Vanessa mocked her for moving too slowly.

Olivia gently ran her fingers across the faded quilt.

Something beneath the mattress felt uneven.

She frowned.

"Eleanor always said this bed squeaked."

She lifted one corner of the mattress.

Nothing.

Then she noticed one of the wooden floorboards beneath the bed sat slightly higher than the others.

It wasn't obvious.

Unless you knew where to look.

"Officer?"

The young patrolman stepped closer.

"What is it?"

"I think there's something here."

Within minutes, Detective Bennett and the forensic team arrived.

The floorboard was carefully photographed before anyone touched it.

A technician loosened two small screws hidden beneath the bed frame.

The plank lifted with a soft creak.

Inside the narrow space...

Rested a small cloth pouch wrapped in plastic.

Laura carefully opened it.

Inside was an old black flip phone.

Its screen was scratched.

Its battery nearly dead.

But it had been protected from dust and moisture.

Olivia covered her mouth.

"Eleanor..."

At the hospital, Eleanor smiled faintly when Laura placed the phone on the bedside table.

"I wondered if anyone would ever find it."

Michael looked surprised.

"You knew it was there?"

Eleanor nodded.

"I hid it."

"When?"

"The week after Vanessa took my tablet away."

Michael frowned.

"I didn't know she took it."

"She told you I had forgotten how to use it."

He remembered.

Vanessa had laughed during a video call months earlier.

"Your mother keeps pressing the wrong buttons. I think she's happier without all that technology."

He had believed her.

Now every memory felt poisoned.

Laura gently picked up the phone.

"Mrs. Harrison..."

"Why did you keep this?"

Eleanor looked out the window before answering.

"Because I knew one day..."

"...someone might finally listen."

The phone was taken to the Digital Forensics Unit.

Technicians carefully charged the aging battery.

For several tense minutes, nothing happened.

Then...

The screen flickered to life.

Michael held his breath.

The wallpaper appeared.

A family photograph.

His father.

His mother.

A much younger Michael.

Taken twenty-five years earlier on a summer vacation.

Laura quietly smiled.

"She never changed it."

The phone contained almost nothing.

No internet.

No recent messages.

No social media.

But one folder caught the technician's attention.

It had no name.

Only a tiny padlock icon.

"Can you open it?" Laura asked.

The technician nodded.

"It'll take a few minutes."

When the folder finally unlocked, everyone in the room fell silent.

There were thirty-seven audio recordings.

Each identified only by date.

The oldest was nearly seven months old.

The newest...

Only four days before Michael came home early.

Laura looked at Michael.

"I think you should hear these."

He nodded silently.

The first recording began with the sound of a bedroom door opening.

Then footsteps.

Vanessa's voice filled the speakers.

"Good morning."

She sounded cheerful.

Almost affectionate.

Eleanor answered quietly.

"Good morning."

Then the tone changed instantly.

"You didn't finish your breakfast."

"I wasn't hungry."

"Liar."

A loud crash echoed through the recording.

Something had been swept off a table.

Vanessa spoke again.

"You don't eat until I say you eat."

The recording ended.

Michael slowly lowered his head.

The second recording was worse.

Vanessa entered Eleanor's room late at night.

"You've been crying again."

Silence.

"I asked you a question."

Eleanor whispered,

"I miss my son."

Vanessa laughed.

"He isn't coming."

"He's too busy building companies."

"He barely remembers to call."

Michael closed his eyes.

He remembered those missed calls Detective Bennett had discovered.

He had tried to call.

But someone had made sure the calls never reached his mother.

Recording after recording revealed the same pattern.

Control.

Humiliation.

Threats.

Isolation.

In one recording, Vanessa deliberately hid Eleanor's medication.

In another, she mocked the elderly woman for struggling to stand.

Then came Recording Twenty-One.

The room became completely silent.

Vanessa's voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

"I've prepared new legal papers."

Eleanor sounded frightened.

"What papers?"

"The ones you're going to sign."

"I won't."

A long pause.

Then Vanessa spoke softly.

"You don't really have a choice."

Another pause.

"If you refuse..."

"I'll tell Michael that Olivia stole your money."

"I'll have her arrested."

Eleanor gasped.

"No..."

"You like that nurse, don't you?"

"Then sign."

The recording ended abruptly.

Michael slammed his fist against the table.

"She blackmailed my mother."

Laura nodded.

"And used Olivia as leverage."

The technician opened another file.

Recording Thirty-Two.

It began with rain hitting the windows.

Vanessa sounded irritated.

"Stop looking at that photograph."

"My husband."

"He's dead."

"He's still my husband."

A slap echoed through the speakers.

Several people in the room flinched.

Then Eleanor quietly whispered,

"You can hurt me."

"But don't make my son hate himself."

Vanessa answered coldly.

"He already will."

No one spoke for several seconds.

Even the technicians stared at the floor.

Laura had investigated homicides.

Kidnappings.

Organized crime.

Yet there was something uniquely heartbreaking about hearing an elderly mother worry more about protecting her son's heart than protecting herself.

"There are still five recordings left," the technician said quietly.

Laura nodded.

"Play the next one."

Recording Thirty-Seven.

The final recording.

The date was only four days before Michael returned home.

The sound quality was clearer than the others.

Apparently, the phone had been lying on the bedside table.

Vanessa entered.

"So..."

"You called Michael again."

"No."

"Liar."

"I only wanted to hear his voice."

"You'll hear it when I decide."

Then came a sentence that froze everyone.

"I only need your signature."

"After that..."

"...you won't be anyone's problem anymore."

Silence.

Eleanor's breathing became uneven.

"What are you going to do?"

Vanessa answered quietly.

"You'll find out."

The recording ended.

The room remained silent.

Michael felt as though all the air had disappeared.

He looked toward Detective Bennett.

"She was planning something."

Laura didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she replayed Vanessa's final sentence.

"I only need your signature."

Her eyes narrowed.

She turned toward Detective Ryan Cole.

"Run another financial search."

"Everything."

"Bank transfers."

"Insurance policies."

"Trust accounts."

"I don't care how long it takes."

Cole nodded.

"You think the forged will wasn't the final goal?"

Laura looked back at the silent phone lying on the evidence table.

"No."

"I think it was only one piece of a much larger plan."

Just then, another digital forensic analyst hurried into the room carrying a tablet.

"Detective..."

"What is it?"

"We recovered something else from the phone."

Laura frowned.

"I thought there were only audio files."

"There were."

"But one recording contains hidden location data."

Michael looked confused.

"Location data?"

The analyst nodded.

"The phone briefly connected to another device."

"When?"

"The night before Mr. Harrison returned home."

Laura's instincts sharpened.

"What device?"

The analyst turned the tablet toward her.

A serial number appeared on the screen.

"It matches a burner phone."

"Registered to no one."

"But that's not the strange part."

"What is?"

The analyst zoomed in on a map.

"The connection wasn't made inside the Harrison estate."

"It came from an abandoned storage warehouse on the east side of the city."

Laura stared at the screen.

Why would someone connected to Vanessa visit an abandoned warehouse?

What was hidden there?

And more importantly...

What else had Vanessa planned after forcing Eleanor to sign that forged will?

For the first time since the investigation began...

The evidence pointed beyond the walls of the Harrison mansion.

The conspiracy was growing larger.

And someone, somewhere, was already trying to erase the next piece of the truth.
