Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lied

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lied
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Emily—no, Evelyn—held Sophie's hand as paramedics pressed gauze against the wound on her head.
"Stay with me, sweetheart."
"I'm tired, Mommy."
Those three words terrified Evelyn more than the blood ever could.
At the hospital, doctors rushed Sophie into the emergency department.
The injury required several stitches, but a CT scan showed no skull fracture.
She was going to recover.
Physically.
While Sophie was being treated, two police officers arrived.
"What happened?"
Before Evelyn could answer, her phone rang.
It was the manager of the Whitmore Hotel.
"Mrs. Carter," he said carefully.
"Our security team has secured the ballroom footage."
"We believe you'll want to see it before anyone else."
An hour later, inside the hotel's security office, the recording began.
The footage was crystal clear.
It showed Preston walking toward the family tables while everyone watched the bride and groom posing for photographs.
He glanced around.
Then quietly picked up Sophie's denim jacket from the back of her chair.
From his tuxedo pocket, he removed his missing iPhone.
He slipped it into the jacket.
Less than five seconds.
Then he walked away.
Minutes later, he returned with the microphone.
"Someone has stolen my phone."
Exactly as he had planned.
The video continued.
When Sophie cried and insisted she hadn't taken it, Preston ripped the jacket from her hands, "found" the phone, and turned to the guests as if he had just exposed a criminal.
Then came the moment no one in the room could deny.
Evelyn stepped between her daughter and Preston.
She never touched him.
She never threatened him.
Preston walked to the menu display.
Lifted the heavy oak board.
And deliberately swung it into the side of an eight-year-old girl's head.
The room fell silent.
Even the police officers stopped taking notes.

One quietly said,
"This wasn't an accident."
