CHAPTER 3: Learning to Feel Safe Again

CHAPTER 3: Learning to Feel Safe Again
The mansion was sold several months later.
Marcus couldn't bear to keep a house filled with painful memories.
Instead, he bought a smaller home beside a quiet lake.
No gates.
No grand ballroom.
No endless empty rooms.
Just sunlight, a garden, and a swing hanging from an old oak tree.
Healing didn't happen overnight.
Lily was afraid whenever someone raised their voice.
She hid food in her bedroom because she worried she would be punished again.
Sometimes she apologized simply for asking for a glass of water.
Each time, Marcus knelt beside her.
"You never have to earn kindness," he would say.
"You already deserve it."
Little by little, the fear faded.
The bright colors returned to her drawings.
She laughed while chasing butterflies in the backyard.
She made new friends at school.
One afternoon, Marcus found a picture taped to the refrigerator.
It showed a little girl holding her father's hand beneath a huge yellow sun.
Across the top she had written in careful letters:
Home is where I feel safe.
May you like
Marcus quietly wiped away a tear before placing the drawing in a frame.
It became the most valuable thing in the house.
