Chapter 9 â The Husband Who Begged

Chapter 9 â The Husband Who Begged
Andrew Whitmore had spent his entire life making other people beg.
Employees begged to keep their jobs.
Business partners begged for another chance.
Investors begged for his attention.
Even family members learned that approval from Andrew was something they had to earn.
He liked that feeling.
The feeling of being needed.
The feeling of being untouchable.
But that night...
For the first time in his life...
Andrew Whitmore was the one begging.
The Message From The Past
The old photograph remained on his desk.
The photograph of two families standing together.
The Escalantes.
The Whitmores.
Before the betrayal.
Before the lies.
Before everything collapsed.
Andrew kept staring at the handwritten message on the back.
"If Mariana ever discovers the truth, protect her. Not the company. Not the name. Her."
His father's handwriting.
His father's final warning.
And the cruelest part was...
Andrew had done the exact opposite.
He protected the company.
He protected the name.
He protected his own pride.
And he destroyed the one person his father wanted him to protect.
His phone buzzed.
A message from his assistant.
The board has approved the transfer. Your executive access has been removed.
Andrew stared at the screen.
For years, his entire identity had been connected to Whitmore Holdings.
The office.
The title.
The respect.
Gone.
All because of one woman.
The woman he had underestimated.
His wife.
The Mansion Without Mariana
Andrew walked through the mansion.
Slowly.
Every room carried a memory.
The dining room.
Where Mariana once prepared dinner while Margaret criticized everything.
The library.
Where Mariana helped him organize business reports.
The garden.
Where she sat alone after he came home late.
He had never noticed how much of the house belonged to her.
Not financially.
Emotionally.
She had filled every empty space.
And when she left...
She took the warmth with her.
Andrew stopped outside their bedroom.
The door was open.
Inside, everything was exactly as she left it.
Except one thing.
Her wedding photograph was gone.
The frame remained.
The picture disappeared.
That hurt more than he expected.
Because it meant Mariana had not forgotten their marriage.
She had removed the evidence of it.
The Call He Never Expected
At 2:00 in the morning, Andrew drove to the Escalante estate.
The security guards immediately recognized him.
But they did not welcome him.
One stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, you don't have an appointment."
Andrew looked through the gates.
"I need to see Mariana."
The guard hesitated.
"I can't allow that."
For years, people opened doors for Andrew.
Now someone was telling him no.
And he realized something terrifying.
This was what Mariana had felt.
Every day.
"I need five minutes."
The guard shook his head.
"She said no visitors."
Andrew froze.
"She said?"
The guard nodded.
"She expected you might come."
Of course she did.
Mariana always thought ahead.
Always prepared.
Always smarter than everyone believed.
The Woman Behind The Door
Twenty minutes later, Mariana appeared.
She stood several feet away.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Just calm.
That was worse.
Andrew had expected hatred.
He could handle hatred.
But her calmness meant something.
She had already accepted losing him.
"Why are you here?"
Her voice was quiet.
Andrew looked at her.
And for the first time in years...
He didn't know what to say.
"I need to explain."
Mariana looked at him.
"Explain what?"
"Everything."
A faint smile appeared.
"That's a very large word for someone who spent four years telling me I was imagining things."
Andrew looked down.
Because she was right.
The First Apology
"I was wrong."
Mariana said nothing.
"I was arrogant."
Still nothing.
"I hurt you."
Her expression changed slightly.
Not forgiveness.
Pain.
"I humiliated you."
His voice became lower.
"I let my mother treat you like you were beneath us."
A pause.
"I let Brenda disrespect you."
He swallowed.
"And I raised my hand against you."
The silence after those words was heavy.
Because saying them out loud made them real.
"I am sorry."
The words felt impossible coming from him.
But he meant them.
For the first time...
He actually meant them.
The Woman Who Wouldn't Break
Mariana looked at him.
"Do you know what I wanted that night?"
Andrew looked up.
"I wanted you to ask me if I was okay."
His face changed.
"Before you accused me."
"Before you believed your mother."
"Before you believed Brenda."
A tear formed in her eye.
But she refused to let it fall.
"I wanted my husband."
Andrew closed his eyes.
Because that was the one thing he could never give her.
The Question That Destroyed Him
"Andrew."
"Yes?"
"Did you ever love me?"
He looked at her.
A simple question.
But impossible.
Because the answer required him to face the person he had become.
"I..."
He stopped.
Mariana nodded slowly.
"That's what I thought."
"No."
Andrew stepped forward.
"I did love you."
"Then why did you treat me like I was disposable?"
He had no answer.
The Truth About Brenda
"I ended things with Brenda."
Mariana didn't react.
Andrew continued.
"She was never what I thought she was."
A quiet laugh escaped Mariana.
"She was exactly what you wanted her to be."
He looked confused.
"What?"
"You wanted someone who admired you."
A pause.
"Brenda did."
Mariana looked at him.
"I loved you enough to challenge you."
"And you hated that."
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Brenda made him feel powerful.
Mariana made him face himself.
And he had chosen the easier woman.
The Hidden Evidence
Andrew reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Mariana looked at it.
"What is that?"
"Something my father left."
She didn't move.
"Why show me?"
"Because you deserve the truth."
Inside were copies of old documents.
Records.
Letters.
One particular letter caught her attention.
From Richard Whitmore.
To Carlos Escalante.
Mariana read it.
Her expression changed.
"What is this?"
Andrew looked away.
"My father knew your mother was investigating the necklace."
"And?"
"He tried to stop what happened."
A pause.
"But he failed."
The Confession
Andrew's voice broke slightly.
"My father wasn't the mastermind."
Mariana looked at him.
"Then who was?"
Andrew hesitated.
The answer was difficult.
Because it involved someone he loved.
Someone who raised him.
Someone he protected his entire life.
"Margaret."
Silence.
"Your mother?"
Andrew nodded.
"My father discovered what she did."
Mariana stared.
"Why didn't he expose her?"
Andrew's eyes became filled with shame.
"Because he was afraid."
The Final Request
Andrew looked at her.
"Help me expose them."
Mariana studied him.
"You want to fight your own mother?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
His answer came immediately.
"Because I spent my whole life protecting the wrong person."
For a moment...
Mariana saw something familiar.
Not the arrogant man from the mansion.
Not the man who slapped her.
A broken man who finally understood.
But understanding did not erase damage.
"You think telling the truth fixes everything?"
Andrew lowered his head.
"No."
"Then what do you want?"
He looked at her.
"I want the chance to do one thing right."
The Price Of Forgiveness
Mariana stepped closer.
"Andrew."
"Yes?"
"Even if you help me..."
A pause.
"You don't get your old life back."
He nodded.
"I know."
"You don't get the company."
"I know."
"You don't get to walk back into my life because you finally regret losing me."
His eyes filled with pain.
"I know."
The Last Warning
Before he left, Mariana said:
"Andrew."
He turned.
"Yes?"
"The next time you stand beside me..."
His expression changed.
"It won't be as my husband."
A pause.
"It will be as a witness."
Andrew nodded.
Because he understood.
The woman he once owned in his mind...
Was gone.
The Hidden Enemy Moves
But neither of them noticed one thing.
Across the city...
Margaret was watching.
She had security footage.
She had listened.
She knew Andrew had turned against her.
Her own son.
The only person she believed would never betray her.
She poured herself a glass of wine.
Then smiled.
"Interesting."
She looked at the photograph of Mariana.
"You really thought your husband was your biggest problem."
She opened a hidden drawer.
Inside was a small velvet box.
The same kind of box that once held the emerald necklace.
But this one contained something else.
A key.
And a note.
A note written twenty years ago.
"If the Escalante girl discovers the truth, use the final weapon."
Margaret closed the drawer.
Because the war had entered a new stage.
Andrew had chosen Mariana.
The necklace had revealed the past.
But now...
Margaret was ready to destroy the future.
