Chapter 1: The Camera Never Blinked

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Blinked
The gallery fell into stunned silence.
Eight-year-old Emma clung to her mother, tears streaming down her face as blood trickled from a cut above her eyebrow.
Her mother, Claire Bennett, gently pressed a handkerchief against the wound.
She didn't scream.
She didn't argue.
She simply looked up at the man standing over them.
Richard Hawthorne.
A celebrated art collector.
A generous donor.
A man who believed his reputation placed him above everyone else.
Richard pointed at the child.
"She tried to steal a diamond brooch."
Claire spoke quietly.
"You never searched her."
"I didn't need to."
"You never asked a single question."
"I saw enough."
Claire slowly raised her eyes to the security camera mounted above the entrance.
"No."
Her voice was steady.
"You only saw what you wanted to see."
Richard laughed.
"Even if there is footage, everyone here watched what happened."
Claire looked around the room.
Hundreds of wealthy guests lowered their eyes.
No one had stopped him.
No one had protected a frightened child.
Claire carefully stood, lifting Emma into her arms.
Then she made one phone call.
"Please preserve every second of today's security recordings."
Richard smirked.
"You think a video will save you?"
Claire answered without emotion.
May you like
"No."
"It will save the truth."
