Chapter 2: The Evidence No Parent Should Ever See

Chapter 2: The Evidence No Parent Should Ever See

The house fell silent after the detectives spoke.

My husband, Ryan, stood frozen in the living room.

Emily still held one hand against her reddening cheek.

From the bedroom, seven-year-old Lily coughed weakly.

One detective looked at Ryan.

"Sir, we'd like you to sit down."

"This is ridiculous," Ryan snapped.

"I've done everything for my family."

The detective calmly placed several bank statements on the coffee table.

"Then perhaps you can explain why forty-three thousand dollars donated for your daughter's cancer treatment was transferred into online gambling accounts."

Ryan's face lost all color.

Emily stared at the statements.

"What..."

"What is this?"

Another detective slid photographs across the table.

Luxury hotel receipts.

Designer watches.

Restaurant bills.

Wire transfers to an unknown woman.

Emily's hands began shaking.

"You told me the hospital was delaying invoices."

Ryan couldn't answer.

"You said insurance paperwork was taking longer."

Silence.

Then Lily called softly from her room.

"Mom?"

Emily immediately rushed to her bedside.

Lily smiled weakly.

"Are the police here because I didn't take my medicine fast enough?"

Emily felt her heart shatter.

"No, sweetheart."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

The detectives quietly followed.

One pediatric investigator looked at the bottles beside Lily's bed.

"Who prepares her medication?"

"My husband," Emily whispered.

"He always said he wanted to make sure I didn't make mistakes."

The investigator exchanged a glance with another officer.

They carefully collected every prescription bottle into evidence bags.

Hours later, laboratory results began returning.

The chemotherapy medications were genuine.

But the pills Ryan had insisted were "immune boosters"...

Contained substances that should never have been given to a child undergoing cancer treatment.

Emily collapsed into a chair.

"No..."

One detective gently placed another folder before her.

"We also recovered this from your husband's office."

Inside were life insurance applications.

Drafts of beneficiary changes.

And text messages.

One message read:

"If the treatments fail, nobody questions nature."

Another:

"The payout solves everything."

Emily couldn't breathe.

The man she had trusted to protect their daughter...

Had been planning to profit from losing her.

At that moment, Ryan was led out of the house in handcuffs.
