Chapter 2 — The Boardroom Reckoning

Chapter 2 — The Boardroom Reckoning

The convoy rolled through the city before sunrise.

Inside the first car, Isabella never looked back.

Her assistant, Daniel, handed her a tablet.

"They're already calling every board member," he said.

She nodded.

"Too late."

For years she had allowed Lucas to believe every success belonged to him.

Every contract.

Every expansion.

Every miracle that saved his company.

He never questioned why investors trusted him.

He never wondered why banks approved impossible loans.

He never asked why competitors suddenly disappeared.

Because arrogance never asks questions.

It only celebrates itself.

Twenty minutes later, Isabella entered the company's headquarters.

Employees froze.

Some recognized her only as the quiet wife.

Others barely noticed her during the last three years.

Today was different.

Every executive was already waiting inside the boardroom.

Lucas burst through the doors moments later.

His tie hung loose.

His face had lost all color.

"You planned this!"

Isabella calmly took the chair at the head of the table.

"No."

"I prepared for it."

Richard slammed both hands onto the table.

"This company belongs to us!"

Daniel placed a thick folder in front of every director.

"No," he replied.

"It belongs to Hathaway Global Holdings."

Lucas frowned.

"What is Hathaway?"

Isabella folded her hands.

"My family."

Silence filled the room.

One director slowly pushed forward the official ownership documents.

"Four years ago," Isabella explained, "your company was bankrupt."

"Nobody knew because my family quietly purchased your debt."

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"Impossible..."

"It was either that..."

"...or liquidation."

Lucas stared at her.

"You let me think I saved the company."

"You needed confidence."

"You didn't deserve the truth."

One by one...

Board members raised their hands.

A unanimous vote.

Lucas Carter—

Removed as CEO.

Effective immediately.

Security entered.

The exact same guards Lucas had ordered to escort Isabella out the previous night.

The lead guard cleared his throat.

"Mr. Carter..."

"We're instructed to escort you from the building."

Lucas laughed.

Then realized nobody else was laughing.

His empire had vanished...

In less than one hour.

Outside...

Reporters had already gathered.

Cameras flashed nonstop.

Every business channel carried the same headline.

CARTER INDUSTRIES UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP.

Lucas walked past the reporters in complete silence.

For the first time...

Nobody wanted his autograph.

Everyone wanted his downfall.

That afternoon...

Sophie appeared at Isabella's office.

Without makeup...

Without confidence...

Without the smile she wore at dinner.

She stood quietly.

"I didn't know."

Isabella looked up from her paperwork.

"I believe you."

Sophie blinked.

"You... do?"

"I believe you knew he cheated."

"I believe you knew he lied."

"I don't believe you knew he was lying to you too."

Sophie lowered her head.

"He promised the baby would inherit everything."

Isabella gave a sad smile.

"He promised everyone everything."

Sophie left without another word.

Neither woman cried.

Some endings no longer required tears.

That evening...

Lucas sat alone inside an empty penthouse.

Every luxury around him suddenly felt rented.

Because legally...

Most of it already belonged to the company.

And the company...

Belonged to Isabella.

He finally understood.

May you like

He hadn't divorced a powerless woman.

He had declared war on the only person keeping him alive.
