Chapter 2: The Fall That Never Came
The wind howled between the towers, carrying the distant hum of sirens through the sleeping city.
Julian took another step.
Only one remained between them.
"You've become paranoid," he said softly. "You've imagined enemies where there are none."
Elena let out a bitter laugh.
"Then why are you standing between me and the only exit?"
His smile appeared slowly.
"Because I don't trust what you might do."
"To myself?"
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"To me."
For a heartbeat neither of them moved.
Then Julian lunged.
His hand shot toward her wrist.
Instinct took over.
Elena twisted sideways, breaking his grip just as her heel slipped against the rain-soaked stone.
The world tilted.
She felt herself falling—
But instead of plunging over the railing, she crashed hard onto the balcony floor.
The impact stole her breath.
Julian stared at her, surprise flashing across his face.
He hadn't expected her to survive even that.
Before he could move again, a sharp knock echoed through the penthouse.
Three heavy knocks.
Police.
Julian's expression changed instantly.
