Chapter 4: The Medical Report

Chapter 4: The Medical Report

The first thing Evan noticed when he entered the hospital that morning was the silence.

Hospitals were supposed to be places of healing.

But this one felt like a courtroom.

Every hallway.

Every closed door.

Every whispered conversation.

It reminded him that people could hide the truth for years.

And sometimes the truth only came out when someone was hurt badly enough.

Leah sat near the window in her hospital room.

Her shoulder was wrapped securely.

Her face looked exhausted.

Not just from the injury.

From everything.

The secrets.

The fear.

The years of carrying a burden that was never supposed to be hers alone.

When she saw Evan enter, she immediately looked away.

"I thought you had work."

"I canceled."

She looked surprised.

"Evan..."

"I need to know what happened."

Her eyes lowered.

"You already know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I know what you told me."

A pause.

"I need to know what you survived."

Before Leah could answer, the door opened.

Dr. Williams entered holding a folder.

His expression was serious.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Evan stood.

"Yes."

"I wanted to speak with both of you together."

Leah became tense.

"Is something wrong?"

The doctor looked at her.

"Your injury is more serious than we first believed."

Evan immediately moved closer.

"What does that mean?"

Dr. Williams opened the file.

"The impact caused a deep soft tissue injury and significant bruising."

He looked at Leah.

"The force used was considerable."

Evan's jaw tightened.

A hockey stick.

Against a woman who wasn't fighting back.

Against a woman protecting a child.

"How long will recovery take?"

"Several weeks."

"Will there be permanent damage?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Possibly."

That single word changed the atmosphere.

Because everyone understood.

This wasn't an argument.

It wasn't a misunderstanding.

It was violence.

But then the doctor said something unexpected.

"There's something else."

Evan looked up.

"What?"

"When we reviewed your medical history, we noticed something."

He looked at Leah.

"You've had several injuries over the past few years."

Leah froze.

Evan turned toward her.

"What injuries?"

She didn't answer.

The doctor continued.

"Repeated bruising."

"An untreated wrist injury."

"Several visits where the cause of injury was listed as accidental."

Evan stared at Leah.

"You never told me."

Leah's eyes filled.

"I didn't want you involved."

"Involved in what?"

The doctor gently closed the file.

"Mr. Mercer..."

He paused.

"Your wife has a pattern of injuries consistent with someone who may have experienced repeated intimidation or physical aggression."

The room became completely silent.

Evan looked at Leah.

Not with anger.

With shock.

"Was it Sabrina?"

Leah didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

The doctor stepped outside to give them privacy.

Evan remained standing.

"How long?"

Leah looked down.

"I don't know."

"Leah."

Her voice broke.

"Since before Ellie was born."

Evan felt something inside him collapse.

"She hurt you before?"

"Not like this."

"But yes."

Leah wiped her tears.

"At first it was just words."

"Then threats."

"Then pushing."

"Grabbing my arm."

"Blocking doors."

"Taking my phone."

Each sentence became harder.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Leah laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

"Because nobody believes women like me."

Evan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at him.

"Sabrina was charming."

"Successful."

"Everyone loved her."

"And I was the woman who appeared out of nowhere with a baby."

The words hit him.

Because he understood.

Sabrina hadn't only controlled Leah.

She had controlled the image around Leah.

"She told people I was obsessed with you."

Leah whispered.

"She told them I couldn't accept that you chose her."

"She made me look unstable before I ever had a chance to speak."

Evan walked toward the window.

His mind replayed memories.

Arguments.

Moments when Sabrina cried.

Moments when Leah looked afraid.

Moments he ignored.

Because Sabrina always had an explanation.

"I should have seen it."

Leah looked at him.

"No."

"I should have."

"Evan."

"No."

He turned around.

"I trusted the wrong person."

The door opened again.

This time, Detective Collins entered.

"I apologize for interrupting."

Evan looked at him.

"What happened?"

The detective held a tablet.

"We found something connected to Sabrina."

He placed the tablet on the table.

A series of photographs appeared.

Security images.

Leah outside her apartment.

Sabrina following her.

Watching her.

Waiting.

Evan's expression changed.

"Where did you get these?"

"From a private security company."

"Why do they have them?"

Detective Collins looked serious.

"Because Sabrina hired them."

Leah closed her eyes.

"I knew it."

Evan turned.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Leah looked ashamed.

"Because every time I tried, something happened."

"What do you mean?"

"She always knew."

Detective Collins explained.

"Sabrina appears to have monitored Leah for months."

"Phone records."

"Location tracking."

"Messages."

"She was collecting information."

"For what?"

The detective looked at Evan.

"Leverage."

That word stayed in the room.

Leverage.

Not protection.

Not love.

Control.

"There's more."

The detective opened another file.

"We found a deleted email from Sabrina."

Evan read it.

The message was sent to someone unnamed.

She won't be a problem much longer. Once Evan understands who the unstable one is, he'll stay where he belongs.

Evan felt sick.

Because he finally understood the scale of it.

Sabrina hadn't reacted to Leah.

She had prepared for Leah.

"She's building a case."

Detective Collins nodded.

"Yes."

"Against Leah?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The detective looked at him.

"Because if she can convince everyone Leah is unstable..."

"She controls Ellie."

The realization hit Evan instantly.

Custody.

This was never only about jealousy.

It was about possession.

That evening, Evan returned home.

Sabrina was waiting.

Of course she was.

She always knew when something changed.

"You talked to the doctor."

Evan stopped.

"How did you know?"

She smiled slightly.

"I know you."

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You knew how I used to think."

Sabrina walked closer.

"You need to be careful."

"About what?"

"Leah."

There it was again.

The same strategy.

Make Leah the threat.

Make herself the protector.

"She lied to you."

Evan stared at her.

"Yes."

"She hid Ellie."

"Yes."

"Then why are you acting like I'm the problem?"

"Because you hurt her."

Sabrina froze.

"What?"

"You hurt Leah."

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"She told you."

"No."

Evan looked at her.

"The evidence did."

A pause.

"Sabrina, I saw the medical report."

For the first time...

Fear appeared.

Real fear.

Not sadness.

Not performance.

Fear.

"You don't understand."

She whispered.

"I understand everything now."

Sabrina stepped back.

"You think you're protecting Leah?"

"No."

Evan shook his head.

"I'm protecting my daughter."

That night, Evan sat alone in his office.

On his desk were three things.

The medical report.

The custody petition.

The evidence against Sabrina.

Three pieces of paper.

Three versions of the same truth.

Sabrina wanted control.

Leah wanted safety.

Ellie wanted her family.

Before going to sleep, Evan checked on Ellie.

She was holding her stuffed animal.

Peaceful.

Unaware of the battle around her.

He whispered:

"I'm sorry I wasn't there before."

A tear fell.

"But I'm here now."

The next morning, Detective Collins called.

"Evan."

His tone was urgent.

"We found something else."

"What?"

"A recording."

"From where?"

"Sabrina's apartment."

Evan stood.

"What kind of recording?"

A pause.

"One that proves she knew exactly what she was doing."

Evan looked toward Ellie's room.

The battle was no longer about accusations.

Or secrets.

Or the past.

It was about proving who was telling the truth.

And for the first time...

Sabrina's perfect mask was beginning to crack.
