Part 2: The Door They Never Expected Me to Open

Part 2: The Door They Never Expected Me to Open

No one spoke.

The tray slipped from Prudence's hands.

Roasted chicken scattered across the kitchen floor.

My mother stared at me as though she'd seen a ghost.

"You... you're home?"

I didn't answer.

I walked straight past both of them.

I knelt beside Jamie.

He looked up at me with wide, uncertain eyes.

"Daddy?"

Five years.

Five birthdays.

Five years of missed hugs, school pictures, and bedtime stories.

All gone in a single word.

I pulled him into my arms.

"I'm here now."

He buried his face against my shoulder and whispered,

"I knew you'd come someday."

Behind me, Sarah began crying.

May you like

Not loudly.

Just the quiet tears of someone who had spent years pretending she was strong enough to survive tomorrow.
