Chapter 8 — The Father She Tried to Destroy

Chapter 8 — The Father She Tried to Destroy
At 7:06 the next morning, Daniel received the email that changed the custody battle into a war.
The subject line contained only six words:
Emergency Petition for Sole Custody.
He opened it.
His hands went cold.
Serena's attorneys were accusing him of being an emotionally unstable father.
Neglectful.
Controlling.
Financially reckless.
And, worst of all, dangerous.
Daniel read the allegations twice.
Then a third time.
Every lie was wrapped around a fragment of truth.
That was what made it terrifying.
Serena knew his weaknesses.
She knew every mistake he had ever made.
Every argument.
Every late night.
Every business trip.
Every moment he had lost his patience.
She had collected them all.
And now she was turning his entire marriage into a weapon.
The Father She Invented
At the preliminary hearing, Serena arrived first.
She wore a simple cream-colored dress.
No jewelry.
No dramatic makeup.
Her hair was tied loosely behind her shoulders.
She looked exhausted.
Vulnerable.
Like a mother who had spent weeks protecting her children from an unreasonable husband.
Daniel walked into the courtroom with Marcus.
Serena didn't look at him.
Instead, she lowered her eyes.
The judge noticed.
So did everyone else.
Her attorney stood.
“Your Honor, my client is frightened.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“She has endured years of intimidation from the petitioner.”
Marcus whispered:
“Don't react.”
Daniel forced himself to remain still.
Serena finally looked at him.
For one second, their eyes met.
There was no fear there.
Only calculation.
The First Accusation
Serena's attorney presented photographs.
Daniel shouting during an argument.
Daniel standing outside the children's bedroom.
Daniel holding Ava's wrist while trying to stop her from running into the street.
Daniel asleep at his desk.
Daniel drinking wine at a company dinner.
Every photograph was real.
Every photograph had been stripped of context.
“This is a pattern,” the attorney said.
“A pattern of instability.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then another image appeared.
His hand was raised.
The photograph made it look as though he were about to strike someone.
Marcus stood.
“Objection.”
The judge looked at him.
“On what basis?”
“The photograph is cropped.”
Serena's attorney smiled.
“Perhaps. But the underlying behavior remains.”
Marcus requested the original file.
The attorney hesitated.
That hesitation lasted only two seconds.
But Daniel noticed.
So did the judge.
The Secret Recording
Then Serena's attorney played audio.
Daniel heard his own voice.
“You will never take my children from me.”
Then Serena's voice.
“Maybe I should leave.”
Daniel answered:
“Try it.”
The courtroom went silent.
The judge looked at Daniel.
He felt his stomach drop.
The recording sounded terrible.
Until Marcus stood.
“Your Honor, may we hear the entire conversation?”
Serena's attorney objected.
Marcus produced a transcript.
“The recording was edited.”
The judge frowned.
“Do you have the complete file?”
“Yes.”
Marcus submitted it.
The full conversation played.
Serena had threatened to disappear with the children.
Daniel had begged her not to.
The phrase “Try it” had come after she said:
“If I leave tonight, you'll never see them again.”
The context changed everything.
The judge listened quietly.
But Serena's attorney wasn't finished.
The Marriage Diary
He produced a leather-bound journal.
“Your Honor, these are my client's private notes from the marriage.”
Daniel recognized it.
Serena's diary.
He had seen it once.
Years ago.
He never opened it.
Now pages were displayed on the screen.
Daniel gets angry when work overwhelms him.
Daniel drinks when stressed.
Daniel doesn't trust me.
Daniel thinks everyone is against him.
Each entry made him look worse.
Then came one sentence.
I am afraid he will hurt the children.
Daniel felt the room close around him.
He turned toward Serena.
She looked down.
Perfectly convincing.
Then Marcus approached.
“May I examine the diary?”
The judge allowed it.
Marcus flipped through several pages.
Then stopped.
“Your Honor, this entry is dated March 14.”
“Yes.”
“The previous page is dated March 22.”
Serena's attorney frowned.
Marcus continued.
“The entries aren't chronological.”
“What does that prove?”
Marcus held up another page.
“This entry was supposedly written three months before the incident described.”
He turned to Daniel.
“Was that incident recorded anywhere?”
“Yes.”
“Police report?”
“Yes.”
“Date?”
Daniel answered.
“September 4.”
Marcus looked at the judge.
“This diary entry is dated August 11, but references details from the September incident.”
The courtroom became quiet.
The judge examined the document.
Serena's face changed.
Only slightly.
But Daniel saw it.
The first crack.
The Secret She Didn't Expect Him to Know
Marcus wasn't finished.
“Your Honor, we believe portions of this diary were manufactured after the fact.”
Serena's attorney objected.
Marcus produced digital metadata.
The entries had been photographed and scanned months after the dates written on them.
Some files had been edited.
Others had been created on computers belonging to Serena's attorney's office.
Serena stood suddenly.
“That is impossible.”
The judge looked at her.
“Mrs. Brooks, please remain seated.”
Serena sat.
Daniel watched her.
For the first time, he saw something beyond calculation.
Fear.
The Affair
Then Serena's attorney changed strategy.
“If my client is being accused of fabrication, perhaps we should discuss why the marriage deteriorated.”
Daniel's stomach tightened.
Marcus whispered:
“They're going after your personal life.”
The attorney turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Brooks, did you have an affair?”
The room went silent.
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
“Yes.”
Serena's eyes lifted.
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“With whom?”
“A woman from my company.”
“Was Serena aware?”
“Yes.”
“Did you lie to her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you continue seeing the woman after Serena discovered the affair?”
“No.”
The attorney raised an eyebrow.
“She says you did.”
“She is lying.”
The attorney displayed another photograph.
Daniel with the woman.
Dinner.
A hotel lobby.
A business conference.
None of the images proved an affair continued.
But they were enough to create doubt.
Serena's attorney looked toward the judge.
“This is the emotional environment in which these children were raised.”
Daniel's fists tightened.
His marriage had failed.
He knew that.
He would carry that shame.
But he would not let Serena turn his mistakes into permission to destroy his children.
Ava's Drawing
Marcus called a witness.
The school counselor.
She brought several drawings made by Ava.
One showed Daniel.
A large figure holding both children's hands.
Another showed Serena standing far away.
A third contained a dark closet.
The counselor explained:
“Ava repeatedly drew herself and Noah hiding.”
Serena's attorney objected.
“Children's drawings are not reliable evidence.”
The counselor looked at the judge.
“Perhaps not by themselves.”
She placed a file on the table.
“But these drawings were accompanied by statements.”
“What statements?”
The counselor hesitated.
Then read one.
Ava had said:
“We hide when Serena gets angry.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Serena looked toward the floor.
The Babysitter
Then Lydia testified.
She entered the courtroom quietly.
Serena stared at her.
The color drained from her face.
Lydia described the children.
The bruises.
The threats.
The recordings.
And the night Serena forced her to leave.
Serena's attorney attacked immediately.
“You were paid by Mr. Brooks.”
“No.”
“You have financial problems.”
“Yes.”
“Mr. Brooks offered you money to testify.”
“No.”
“You hate Serena.”
Lydia looked at Serena.
“I used to be afraid of her.”
The attorney smiled.
“And now?”
Lydia answered:
“Now I'm afraid of what happens if nobody tells the truth.”
The courtroom went silent.
Serena's Perfect Story Collapses
Marcus played the recordings.
Serena's voice.
Lydia's voice.
The children crying in the background.
The threats.
The manipulation.
The planning.
Then came the recording that changed the case.
Serena's voice said:
“Daniel will lose them before anyone understands what happened.”
A man's voice answered:
“And the trust?”
Serena replied:
“Once he loses custody, everything transfers.”
Daniel looked at the judge.
The judge looked at Serena.
Her face had gone white.
The Father
Then Daniel's attorney played the final recording.
The man's voice was unmistakable.
Daniel's father.
“You promised she would never know.”
Serena answered:
“She won't.”
“What about the children?”
“They're leverage.”
Daniel felt something inside him shatter.
The courtroom erupted.
Serena stood.
“No.”
The judge struck the gavel.
“Order!”
Daniel stared at the speakers.
His father's voice continued.
“The boy is old enough to remember.”
Serena replied:
“Then make sure he forgets.”
Daniel's hands began shaking.
Noah.
His little boy.
Someone had wanted him to forget.
Forget what?
What had he seen?
The Judge's Decision
The judge ordered an immediate temporary custody arrangement.
Daniel would have primary physical custody.
Serena would have supervised visitation.
She was ordered to surrender her passport.
Her access to the children's financial accounts was frozen.
And the court ordered an independent investigation into the financial trust.
Serena sat motionless.
Daniel expected anger.
Instead, she smiled.
A tiny smile.
Almost invisible.
Marcus noticed it.
“What?”
Daniel whispered:
“She isn't scared.”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“She wanted something else.”
The Message
That evening, Daniel returned to the safe house.
Ava ran into his arms.
Noah followed.
Daniel dropped to his knees.
He hugged both children.
“I've got you.”
Ava whispered:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Serena coming back?”
Daniel looked at her.
“No one is going to hurt you again.”
Noah asked:
“Promise?”
Daniel hugged him tighter.
“I promise.”
For the first time in weeks, they slept peacefully.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One photograph.
His father standing outside the courthouse.
Alive.
Watching.
Below the photograph was a message.
You won the hearing.
A second message appeared.
You haven't won the war.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then came the final message.
Ask Ava what she saw the night Grandpa came into her room.
Daniel slowly looked toward the hallway.
Ava was standing there.
Awake.
Watching him.
Her face was pale.
Daniel crouched.
“Ava?”
She didn't answer.
“What did Grandpa do?”
Ava's lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“He told me Mommy wasn't my real mother.”
Daniel froze.
Noah appeared behind her.
And before Daniel could speak, Ava added six words that changed everything.
“He said you weren't my real daddy.”
Daniel stared at his children.
The mansion.
The trust.
Serena.
His father.
The financial conspiracy.
Suddenly, all of it seemed connected to a question he had never thought to ask.
May you like
Who were his children?
And why had someone spent years trying to make sure he never found out?
