A year later, the penthouse felt different.
Laughter had replaced fear.
Ava had returned to school, joined the debate team, and begun mentoring younger students who had experienced difficult family situations.
One evening, father and daughter stood on the balcony overlooking the city lights.
"I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner," Michael said quietly.
Ava squeezed his hand.
"You saw it when it mattered."
He smiled through tears.
"I promise you'll never have to wonder whether someone will protect you again."
As the sun disappeared beyond the skyline, Ava realized healing wasn't about forgetting the past.
