Chapter 16: The Last Mission

THE DAUGHTER THEY TRIED TO BREAK
Chapter 16: The Last Mission
Evelyn Carlisle had always believed missions had clear beginnings and endings.
A briefing.
A target.
A strategy.
A final report.
Then you moved on.
That was how she survived years in federal service.
She knew how to enter dangerous places.
She knew how to gather information.
She knew how to eliminate threats.
But the mission she faced now was different.
There was no official assignment.
No badge.
No team waiting for her.
No guarantee she would come home.
Because this time, the mission was not about stopping someone else.
It was about saving what remained of her family.
Three months had passed since Richard Carlisle's arrest.
The world had moved on.
New headlines replaced old ones.
New scandals replaced old crimes.
People stopped talking about the Carlisle empire.
But Evelyn knew better.
People like Richard did not disappear when they were defeated.
Their ideas survived.
Their secrets survived.
Their followers survived.
Evelyn sat at her kitchen table, watching Lily draw.
A normal moment.
A beautiful moment.
The kind of moment she had almost lost forever.
Lily was different now.
She laughed more.
She spoke more.
She no longer froze when someone entered a room.
But Evelyn still noticed small things.
The way Lily checked doors.
The way she became quiet around strangers.
The way she sometimes woke from nightmares she could not explain.
Trauma did not disappear because the danger ended.
It waited.
It healed slowly.
The phone rang.
Evelyn looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Her instincts immediately activated.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice replied.
"Agent Carlisle."
She froze.
Nobody called her that anymore.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Adrian Cross."
The name meant nothing.
But the tone did.
Calm.
Confident.
Controlled.
A tone she had heard before.
Richard.
"What do you want?"
A pause.
"I have information about Richard Carlisle."
Evelyn stood.
"Richard is in prison."
"Yes."
"And his empire is gone."
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"Only the public version."
Evelyn felt cold.
"What are you saying?"
Adrian continued.
"Richard built companies."
"Networks."
"Relationships."
"But his greatest creation was not a business."
A pause.
"It was a system."
The call ended.
Evelyn immediately contacted Marcus.
Thirty minutes later, they were reviewing information.
Marcus looked concerned.
"Adrian Cross."
"You know him?"
"I know the name."
"Who is he?"
Marcus opened a file.
"Former intelligence analyst."
"Brilliant."
"Disappeared five years ago."
Evelyn frowned.
"Why?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Because he was working on behavioral prediction technology."
The room went silent.
"Richard's project."
Marcus nodded.
"Possibly."
Then another message arrived.
This time from Grant.
A prison call request.
Evelyn almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then she remembered Lily.
She answered.
Grant appeared on the screen.
He looked different.
Older.
Less polished.
More human.
"Evelyn."
"What happened?"
Grant looked serious.
"I need to tell you something."
She waited.
"When Richard was arrested, I found another file."
Her expression changed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wasn't sure."
"About what?"
"Whether it was real."
Grant looked down.
"The file was called The Last Mission."
Evelyn felt a strange familiarity.
"What's inside?"
Grant swallowed.
"Everything."
He explained.
Richard had prepared a final contingency plan.
Not for escape.
Not for revenge.
For continuation.
"If he died."
"If he was arrested."
"If his empire collapsed."
Someone else would activate the system.
"Who?"
Grant looked at her.
"I don't know."
That answer frightened her.
Because unknown enemies were always more dangerous.
Then Grant said:
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"Richard wasn't only studying you."
A pause.
"He was preparing you."
Evelyn's face hardened.
"Explain."
Grant continued.
"The documents said you were the only person who ever produced an unexpected outcome."
"Richard thought you could become proof that his theories were correct."
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"He wanted me to become like him."
"No."
Grant shook his head.
"He wanted you to prove you couldn't escape becoming like him."
The words stayed with her.
That night, Evelyn returned to Richard's old research facility.
Officially, it was closed.
Unofficially, Marcus had arranged access.
Inside, everything remained untouched.
Tables.
Computers.
Files.
The remains of an obsession.
Evelyn searched for hours.
Then she found it.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a small recording device.
One file.
Only one.
She pressed play.
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Evelyn."
"If you are hearing this, then I have lost."
She expected arrogance.
Instead, he sounded tired.
Almost old.
"But I want you to understand something."
"I never hated you."
Evelyn frowned.
"You were the only person who challenged my beliefs."
"The only person who proved my calculations wrong."
A pause.
"I spent my life searching for proof that humans could be controlled."
"Then you appeared."
The recording continued.
"You loved when it was illogical."
"You sacrificed when it was irrational."
"You forgave when revenge would have been easier."
Silence.
"You were everything I believed was impossible."
Evelyn stood frozen.
Because for the first time, Richard sounded almost human.
Then his voice changed.
"But that is why I created the Last Mission."
Her expression hardened.
"If I cannot prove that love is weakness..."
"Then I will prove that love can be destroyed."
The recording ended.
Evelyn stared at the device.
The mission was not about power.
Not money.
Not the company.
Richard wanted one final experiment.
He wanted to see if he could break the one thing he failed to control.
Her family.
A noise came from behind her.
Evelyn turned instantly.
A figure stood in the doorway.
"Who are you?"
The person stepped forward.
A woman.
Early forties.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Evelyn."
Her voice made Evelyn freeze.
Because she knew that voice.
"Vanessa?"
But it wasn't Vanessa Vale.
It was someone else.
Someone who looked almost identical.
"My name is Victoria Vale."
Evelyn's hand moved toward her weapon.
"Vanessa's sister."
Victoria smiled.
"Yes."
"Why are you here?"
Victoria looked around the facility.
"Because Richard made one mistake."
"What mistake?"
She looked directly at Evelyn.
"He trusted the wrong people."
Evelyn studied her.
"You worked for him."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why help me?"
Victoria answered:
"Because I saw what happened when he tried to create monsters."
A pause.
"He accidentally created survivors."
Before Evelyn could respond, Victoria handed her a file.
The title made her blood run cold.
LAST MISSION: SUBJECT LILY CARLISLE.
"No."
Victoria's expression was serious.
"Richard had one final plan."
Evelyn opened the file.
Inside was a location.
A date.
And one sentence:
"The successor will be chosen by the child."
Evelyn looked up.
"Chosen?"
Victoria nodded.
"He believes Lily will eventually have to decide."
"Between what?"
Victoria answered:
"Between power and love."
Evelyn closed the file.
For years, Richard had tried to turn Lily into a symbol.
A successor.
A weapon.
But he had forgotten something.
Lily was not a project.
She was a person.
Evelyn walked out of the facility carrying the file.
Marcus waited outside.
He saw her face.
"What happened?"
She looked at him.
"The final mission has started."
"Whose mission?"
Evelyn looked toward the city lights.
"Mine."
At home, Lily was asleep.
Evelyn sat beside her.
Watching her breathe.
She knew the truth now.
The final battle would not be fought in court.
Not in a boardroom.
Not with weapons.
It would be fought inside the heart of a child.
And Evelyn Carlisle was ready.
Because this time...
She was not fighting to defeat an enemy.
She was fighting to protect a future.
