Once Margaret was gone, Claire finally spoke freely.
"When you left for Chicago, she moved into the house."
Daniel stared.
"She said she was helping."
Claire nodded sadly.
"At first."
Then everything changed.
Margaret criticized everything Claire did.
She hid baby formula because she insisted breastfeeding was "the only acceptable way."
She refused to let Claire sleep, claiming a "real mother never rests."
Whenever Claire cried from pain, Margaret called her dramatic.
Then came the infection.
Claire developed a fever and could barely stand.
Instead of calling a doctor, Margaret locked away Claire's phone.
"Your husband has important meetings," she said.
"You'll only distract him."
Daniel's hands shook with anger.
"You were trapped."
