Jake drove Megan straight to the hospital.
Doctors confirmed that she was suffering from severe physical stress and dehydration.
Fortunately, the baby remained stable, but they warned that continued strain could have caused serious complications.
A hospital social worker gently encouraged Megan to document everything.
The bruises were photographed.
Medical records were preserved.
Jake also gave police the spare key his mother had been using and turned over security camera footage from the apartment building, which showed her entering almost every weekday while he was at work.
When confronted, his mother insisted she had only been trying to help.
The evidence told a different story.
The court later issued a protective order preventing her from contacting Megan.
Months later, Megan gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Jake held his daughter in his arms and looked at the woman lying beside him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I should have believed you."
Megan smiled through tired eyes.
"You believe me now."
"Always."
They moved to a new apartment.
The locks were changed.
The spare keys stayed in a safe.
Jake's mother was not invited to visit.
One evening, while rocking their daughter to sleep, Jake looked at the handwritten note he had once left beside Megan's bed.
Rest, sweetheart. Our little one needs your smile.
He added one more sentence beneath it.
