Chapter 8 â The Divorce Papers

THE WIFE HE LEFT BEHIND
Chapter 8 â The Divorce Papers
There are moments in life when everything becomes quiet.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
Just quiet.
The kind of silence that comes before something breaks.
I felt that silence when Daniel said those words.
"We found evidence that Evelyn had been watching your family for months."
For months.
Not days.
Not weeks.
Months.
I sat on the hospital bed after hearing that sentence, unable to move.
My hand rested over my stomach.
Emma was still there.
Still fighting.
Still unaware that the world waiting for her was more complicated than the one we had imagined.
"Ethan."
He looked up immediately.
He had been standing near the window, reading the documents from the investigation.
The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
I handed him the phone.
He read Daniel's message.
And the color drained from his face.
"No."
The word escaped him.
Not anger.
Not denial.
Fear.
"What does he mean by watching us?"
I swallowed.
"I don't know."
Ethan called Daniel immediately.
I listened as his voice changed.
The calm firefighter disappeared.
The husband remained.
"What exactly did you find?"
A pause.
"How long?"
Another pause.
"Are you sure?"
He ended the call several minutes later.
He looked older.
Like the truth had added years to him.
"What?"
I asked.
He sat down slowly.
"Evelyn has been monitoring us since she returned."
"How?"
"Social media. Mutual friends. She contacted people we knew."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
Ethan looked at me.
And I already knew the answer scared him.
"Because she wanted to know everything about our life."
Everything.
Our house.
Our pregnancy.
Our plans.
Our routines.
Our marriage.
I remembered all the strange moments.
The flowers that arrived without a card.
The anonymous messages.
The feeling that someone was always watching.
I had ignored them.
Because I never thought someone would be that obsessed.
But Ethan knew something I didn't.
A history I was never part of.
"She was always like this."
His voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
He hesitated.
"After we broke up..."
I waited.
"She didn't accept it."
The room became silent.
"How long did it take you to realize that?"
He looked down.
"Too long."
There it was again.
The painful truth.
Ethan had spent years being protected by his own belief that he could fix everyone.
He thought Evelyn was someone who needed saving.
He never considered that she might be someone he needed protection from.
We returned home two days later.
But home didn't feel like home anymore.
Security cameras were installed.
The locks were changed.
The police investigation continued.
And every room felt different.
The nursery became the hardest place to enter.
Because it represented everything Evelyn tried to destroy.
A future.
A family.
A life.
One evening, I found Ethan sitting on the floor of the nursery.
He was holding a tiny pair of socks.
"You know those are too small for her now?"
He smiled sadly.
"I know."
"Then why are you holding them?"
He looked at them.
"Because I almost lost the chance to use them."
I didn't answer.
Because I understood.
A week later, something unexpected happened.
A lawyer arrived.
With documents.
I knew immediately.
Because I recognized the envelope.
The shape.
The seriousness.
The weight.
"Ethan?"
He looked at me.
"What?"
I handed him the envelope.
His face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was delivered this morning."
He opened it.
Read the first page.
And froze.
Divorce papers.
For a moment...
Neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan looked at me.
"Lily..."
I shook my head.
"No."
"I didn't send these."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"I swear."
My hands trembled as I took the papers.
The name at the bottom made my heart stop.
Not mine.
Not Ethan's.
Evelyn Carter.
"What is this?"
Ethan read through the pages.
His expression turned from confusion...
To anger.
"She filed them."
I stared.
"Why?"
His jaw tightened.
"She wants to destroy our marriage legally."
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"She tried to destroy me physically."
I looked at him.
"Now she wants to destroy me on paper?"
Ethan took the papers from my hand.
"No."
His voice was firm.
"She doesn't get to do this."
I looked at him.
And for the first time...
I saw something different.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Protection.
Real protection.
"I need you to understand something."
He stepped closer.
"I don't care what she files."
"I don't care what she says."
"I don't care what she tries."
His eyes met mine.
"You are my wife."
The words hurt.
Because once upon a time, they would have comforted me.
Now they reminded me of a promise he had already broken.
"I was your wife in that elevator too."
His face fell.
"I know."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You know now."
Silence.
The next morning, Ethan met with his lawyer.
I expected him to fight.
I expected anger.
But when he returned...
He looked devastated.
"What happened?"
He sat down.
"Evelyn has been planning this for a long time."
"How?"
"She collected information."
"About what?"
He looked at me.
"Our finances."
My heart sank.
"What?"
"She found old documents from when we were engaged."
"Why would she have those?"
Ethan went quiet.
I understood.
"She had access to your things."
He nodded.
Another secret.
Another thing I didn't know.
"Ethan..."
His eyes filled.
"I made mistakes before you."
I looked away.
"That doesn't excuse anything."
"I know."
The lawyer discovered something worse.
Evelyn had prepared a story.
A story where Ethan was still emotionally connected to her.
A story where our marriage was falling apart.
A story where she was the person who truly understood him.
It wasn't just revenge.
It was control.
That night, Ethan received another call.
This time from the police.
I watched his face change.
"What?"
A pause.
"Where?"
Another pause.
"When?"
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
He looked at me.
"They found Marcus."
"Where?"
"Trying to leave the state."
My heart raced.
"Did he confess?"
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"Then why?"
His answer chilled me.
"Because he had something."
"What?"
Ethan looked toward the nursery.
Then back at me.
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
He swallowed.
"That Evelyn didn't plan the elevator accident because she wanted me back."
A terrible feeling entered my chest.
"Then why?"
Ethan's voice was barely a whisper.
"Because she wanted to take everything away from me."
The room became silent.
My husband had spent his life running into danger.
But this time...
Danger had walked straight into our home.
And it wore a familiar face.
The next morning, I found something on my doorstep.
A small package.
No return address.
No name.
Inside was a photograph.
It was a picture of me.
Taken while I was pregnant.
Outside my own house.
On the back was a handwritten message.
Five words.
"You still don't understand."
I dropped the photo.
Because I finally realized something.
Evelyn wasn't finished.
Not even close.
And the divorce papers weren't her attack.
They were only the beginning.
