CHAPTER 14

CHAPTER 14

THE FAMILY HE CHOSE

Six months later...

The Blackwood mansion was no longer a place of fear.

For years, people had whispered about the enormous gates surrounding the property.

They said the mansion belonged to a monster.

A man who controlled the city from the shadows.

A man whose enemies disappeared overnight.

A man who had built an empire through blood and power.

But those stories were incomplete.

Because they never saw what happened inside those walls.

They never saw Victor Blackwood making breakfast for his son.

They never saw him sitting on the floor, surrounded by toys, while Ethan laughed.

They never saw Lily teaching him that a home was not made of marble and gold.

It was made of love.

Victor stood in the kitchen, staring at a small plate in front of him.

Lily walked in and stopped.

For a moment, she simply watched.

The feared mafia boss of Chicago.

The man who could make powerful people tremble.

Was attempting to cut fruit into small pieces for Ethan.

And failing.

"You're holding the knife wrong."

Victor looked up.

"I have held weapons more dangerous than this."

Lily smiled.

"That doesn't mean you know how to cut an apple."

Victor looked at the fruit.

Then at her.

"I don't believe apples are usually this difficult."

She laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind that had slowly become his favorite sound.

And Victor realized something.

Months ago, he never imagined his home would sound like this.

Warm.

Peaceful.

Alive.

Ethan came running into the kitchen.

"Dada!"

Victor immediately turned.

The transformation was instant.

The cold businessman disappeared.

The feared leader disappeared.

Only Ethan's father remained.

He picked him up.

"Good morning, little man."

Ethan placed his small hands on Victor's face.

Then looked at Lily.

"Mama."

The word still surprised Lily.

Even after months.

She looked at Victor.

"I told you he would eventually stop saying that."

Victor smiled.

"Maybe he knows something we don't."

Lily lowered her eyes.

Because she understood.

Ethan wasn't replacing his real mother.

He wasn't forgetting Isabella.

He was simply giving love a new name.

The Blackwood organization had changed too.

After Serena's betrayal, Victor made decisions nobody expected.

He removed those who only valued power.

He promoted those who valued loyalty.

The empire remained strong.

But it was different.

Cleaner.

More controlled.

Marcus noticed the change more than anyone.

One evening, he found Victor reviewing business reports.

"You know..."

Victor looked up.

"What?"

Marcus smiled.

"I never thought I would see the day."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"See what?"

"The day Victor Blackwood became a family man."

Victor looked back at the documents.

"I was always a family man."

Marcus looked amused.

"Really?"

Victor nodded.

"I just didn't know what family meant."

Lily heard those words.

And they stayed with her.

Because Victor Blackwood had changed.

Not because she forced him.

Not because she saved him.

But because Ethan had shown him something.

Power could protect a family.

But only love could create one.

One afternoon, Victor took Lily to a place she had never seen before.

A small house outside the city.

She looked confused.

"Where are we?"

Victor opened the door.

Inside was a completely renovated home.

Warm.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Lily looked around.

"What is this?"

Victor watched her carefully.

"A choice."

She turned.

"What?"

"When you first came into my life, you thought you didn't belong."

A pause.

"You thought you were just a nanny."

Lily looked down.

Victor stepped closer.

"You were wrong."

He handed her a small key.

"This is yours."

Her eyes widened.

"Victor..."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Listen."

His voice softened.

"You spent your life taking care of others."

A pause.

"But nobody took care of you."

Lily felt tears forming.

"So I wanted you to have something that was yours."

She looked around.

"This is too much."

"No."

Victor smiled slightly.

"It isn't enough."

That night, they sat outside the house.

Ethan played nearby.

The sunset covered the sky.

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then Lily asked:

"Are you happy?"

Victor looked at her.

The question was simple.

But important.

Years ago, he would have answered differently.

He would have said happiness was unnecessary.

A weakness.

A distraction.

Now?

He looked at Ethan.

Then at Lily.

"Yes."

She smiled.

"Really?"

Victor nodded.

"For the first time in my life."

But happiness always felt fragile to people who had lived through darkness.

And Victor knew that.

Which was why he still had one fear.

Losing them.

That night, after Ethan fell asleep, Victor found Lily standing by the window.

"You were thinking again."

She smiled.

"You know me too well."

"I do."

A pause.

"That's dangerous."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because now I can't imagine my life without you."

The honesty surprised her.

Victor Blackwood was not a man who spoke about feelings.

But with Lily...

He didn't want to hide.

"Lily."

She looked at him.

He reached into his pocket.

Not a business document.

Not a weapon.

A small box.

Her breath stopped.

"Victor..."

"I know my life is complicated."

A pause.

"I know my name brings danger."

He opened the box.

Inside was a ring.

"But you walked into my darkness and protected my son."

His eyes held hers.

"You showed me that family isn't something you inherit."

A pause.

"It's something you choose."

Lily covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Are you sure?"

Victor smiled.

"I have never been more certain of anything."

Before she could answer, a small voice came from behind them.

"Dada?"

They turned.

Ethan stood there holding his stuffed bear.

Half asleep.

Victor immediately picked him up.

"What are you doing awake?"

Ethan looked at Lily.

Then at Victor.

Then he smiled.

"Family."

The word was unclear.

But they understood.

Lily laughed through her tears.

Victor looked at his son.

Then at the woman standing beside him.

And he knew.

This was the family he chose.

Not because of blood.

Not because of duty.

Because of love.

Three months later...

The Blackwood mansion prepared for a celebration.

Not a business event.

Not a political gathering.

Not a meeting between powerful people.

A wedding.

The entire city was surprised.

Victor Blackwood was getting married.

But not to a wealthy heiress.

Not to someone from a powerful family.

To Lily Carter.

The nanny who had saved his son.

The woman who had changed the most feared man in Chicago.

The night before the wedding, Victor stood outside Ethan's room.

Lily joined him.

"You still can't believe this is happening."

He smiled.

"No."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because years ago, I thought I had everything."

A pause.

"But I had nothing."

He looked at Ethan sleeping.

"Then you came."

Lily leaned against him.

"And now?"

Victor took her hand.

"Now I have everything that matters."

But as the wedding approached...

A forgotten enemy watched from the shadows.

A file was opened.

A photograph was placed on the table.

And a voice whispered:

"Victor Blackwood finally became happy."

A pause.

"Let's see how long that lasts."

Because even after Serena's fall...

The darkness had not completely disappeared.

May you like

And one final secret was waiting.
