Chapter 5: The Home They Were Looking For

Chapter 5: The Home They Were Looking For
A year later, Peter's front porch looked different.
There were flowerpots along the steps.
A small basketball leaned against the railing.
Sidewalk chalk covered the driveway with colorful drawings.
Inside the house, laughter echoed through rooms that had once been quiet.
Drew's leg had healed.
He still walked with a slight limp after long days, but doctors expected him to live a full, active life.
Lily had gained weight and loved helping Peter bake cookies on Saturday mornings.
One evening, Peter tucked them both into bed.
"Uncle Peter?"
Drew's voice came softly through the darkness.
"Yeah, buddy?"
"Can we stay here forever?"
Peter smiled.
"If that's what you want."
Drew nodded.
"It is."
Several months later, the adoption became official.
The judge looked over her glasses and smiled.
"How would you like the court to address Mr. Calder from now on?"
Lily answered first.
"Dad."
Peter looked at her in surprise.
Then Drew quietly repeated the same word.
"Dad."
For a moment, no one in the courtroom spoke.
Peter knelt and wrapped both children in his arms.
"You know," he whispered, "your father loved you more than anything in the world."
Drew looked up.
"And now we have two dads."
Peter's eyes filled with tears.
Aaron had trusted him with the most precious part of his life.
He had arrived later than he wished.
But not too late.
Sometimes, family isn't defined by who gives you life.
It's defined by who refuses to let you face life alone.
As Peter walked out of the courthouse holding one small hand on each side, he realized the children had never been searching for a place to hide.
May you like
They had been trying to find their way home.
The End.
