Chapter 11 — The Man Behind Vanessa

Chapter 11 — The Man Behind Vanessa
The photograph remained on every screen.
Me.
My father.
My mother.
Amelia.
Noah.
Thomas.
All standing together on the night Noah was born.
I couldn't look away.
“That photograph is impossible,” I whispered.
Vanessa said nothing.
I turned toward her.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“Not everything.”
“You always say that.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me what you're hiding this time.”
Her eyes moved toward Thomas's image.
“I wasn't working for him.”
“Then who were you working for?”
She closed her eyes.
“The man behind him.”
A speaker crackled.
Thomas's voice returned.
“Vanessa, you really should stop pretending you had a choice.”
She flinched.
I noticed.
That was the first time I had ever seen genuine fear on her face when Thomas spoke.
“Who is he?” I asked.
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Who is the man behind Thomas?”
She whispered:
“Your father's brother.”
I stared at her.
“My father was an only child.”
“That is what everyone was told.”
Thomas laughed through the speakers.
“Not quite.”
The screens went black.
Then a single name appeared.
VICTOR CARTER.
I stopped breathing.
“No.”
The word escaped before I could think.
“My father didn't have a brother.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“He did.”
“Why have I never heard that name?”
“Because your grandfather erased him.”
“Why?”
“He was dangerous.”
“So was my father.”
“Yes.”
“What did Victor do?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He built the first version of the Archive.”
I stared at her.
“The Archive existed before Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“And Victor created it?”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened?”
“He lost control of it.”
“Who took control?”
“Your father.”
I shook my head.
“My father spent his life trying to destroy it.”
“Because he knew what it could become.”
I looked at the screens.
“Then why was Thomas involved?”
“Thomas found Victor.”
“And?”
“They became partners.”
I suddenly understood.
“That's why Thomas knew everything.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Thomas didn't create the system.”
“He inherited it.”
“Yes.”
“From Victor.”
“Yes.”
A door opened somewhere upstairs.
Vance raised his weapon.
“Someone's moving.”
We waited.
Footsteps descended the staircase.
Slow.
Deliberate.
A man appeared.
He was older.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
Calm expression.
I didn't recognize him.
But Vanessa did.
She stepped backward.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Vanessa.”
Her face drained of color.
Vance aimed his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
The man laughed.
“You're still pretending your gun gives you power.”
“Who are you?”
He looked at me.
“You already know.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He smiled.
“Not yet.”
Thomas appeared on one of the screens.
“Daniel, meet Victor.”
My stomach dropped.
The man standing in front of us was Victor Carter.
My father's supposedly nonexistent brother.
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then said:
“You have your mother's eyes.”
I stepped forward.
“You knew her?”
“I knew her before your father did.”
“Where is she?”
Victor smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
Vance moved beside me.
“Where are the children?”
Victor glanced at him.
“Safe.”
“Bring them here.”
“No.”
Vance raised his weapon.
Victor didn't react.
“Shoot me if it makes you feel better.”
Vance's finger tightened.
I stopped him.
“Wait.”
Victor looked amused.
“Good.”
“Why did you bring us here?”
“To finish something your father started.”
“What?”
“The Archive.”
“I don't want it.”
“That isn't your decision.”
“What do you want from me?”
Victor walked closer.
“The key.”
I pulled it from my pocket.
“You mean this?”
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw genuine emotion.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what it unlocks.”
“Then explain.”
“It unlocks everything.”
“Everything?”
“Every record. Every secret. Every transaction.”
I stared at him.
“And you want control.”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“I want destruction.”
That answer shocked me.
“You want to destroy the Archive?”
“Yes.”
“Then why kidnap Noah?”
“I didn't.”
I stared.
“Thomas did.”
“Why?”
“To force you to bring the key.”
Victor looked toward the screen.
“Thomas has become impatient.”
“Then stop him.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas has something I need.”
“What?”
Victor's expression darkened.
“The final recording.”
I remembered Amelia.
“You mean the recording she has?”
“Yes.”
“Then she's alive.”
Victor nodded.
“She is.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere Thomas can't reach.”
“Where?”
Victor didn't answer.
I stepped toward him.
“You know where my mother is.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“That's not enough.”
“It will have to be.”
“No.”
I pointed toward the screen.
“You've controlled my family for years.”
“No.”
“You've watched us.”
“No.”
“You've manipulated Vanessa.”
Victor looked at her.
“I didn't manipulate Vanessa.”
Vanessa trembled.
“She came to me willingly.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?”
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“You went to him?”
She nodded.
“Why?”
“To save Noah.”
“When?”
“The night Amelia disappeared.”
Vanessa's confession came slowly.
She had been twenty-nine.
Amelia had discovered the Archive.
My father wanted to expose it.
Thomas wanted to control it.
Victor wanted to destroy it.
Everyone wanted something different.
But Vanessa wanted only one thing.
To protect the children.
“Victor approached me,” she said.
“He told me he could keep Noah safe.”
“And you believed him?”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas already had Ethan.”
I froze.
“What?”
Vanessa began crying.
“He took Ethan first.”
I looked toward the stairs.
“What are you talking about?”
“Ethan was missing for nine hours.”
“When?”
“The night Amelia was shot.”
My blood ran cold.
“You never told me.”
“Because Thomas threatened to kill him.”
“But Ethan came home.”
“Victor got him back.”
I stared at her.
“So Victor protected Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“And you joined him.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you turn against Amelia?”
“I didn't.”
“You gave Marcus her location.”
“Because Marcus promised to release Ethan.”
I couldn't believe it.
“You traded Amelia for Ethan.”
Vanessa covered her face.
“I thought she would survive.”
“She almost died.”
“I know.”
“You betrayed her.”
“I know.”
“And Marcus betrayed you.”
“Yes.”
“Because he never intended to release Ethan.”
“No.”
“He wanted Noah.”
“Yes.”
The truth made everything uglier.
There had been no single villain.
There had been layers.
Every person had lied to protect something.
Every lie had created another lie.
And the children had been caught in the middle.
I looked at Victor.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Marcus would betray her.”
“I suspected.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I couldn't expose myself.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was watching me.”
“You're his partner.”
“Not anymore.”
Victor's voice became bitter.
“Thomas has been trying to take control of the Archive for twenty years.”
“And you let him.”
“I tried to stop him.”
“By hiding?”
“By surviving.”
A scream came from upstairs.
Noah.
I ran.
Vance followed.
Victor didn't stop us.
We reached the second floor.
A door was open.
Inside, Noah was sitting on a bed.
Vance's daughter was beside him.
Both were unharmed.
I rushed toward my son.
Noah wrapped his arms around me.
“Daddy!”
I held him tightly.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded.
“Did they hurt you?”
“No.”
“Who brought you here?”
He pointed behind me.
Victor stood in the doorway.
“Uncle Victor.”
I looked at him.
Noah smiled.
“He told me Mommy is alive.”
My heart stopped.
“You saw Mommy?”
Noah nodded.
“She talked to me.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“Where?”
He pointed at the wall.
“There.”
A hidden panel opened.
Behind it was a small monitor.
A live connection.
Amelia appeared.
She looked exhausted.
But she smiled when she saw Noah.
“My baby.”
Noah smiled.
“Mommy.”
I couldn't speak.
Amelia looked at me.
“Daniel.”
I finally found my voice.
“Are you safe?”
“For now.”
“Where are you?”
She glanced toward Victor.
“He knows.”
“Tell me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas is listening.”
The screen flickered.
Amelia's face changed.
“Daniel, don't give Victor the key.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“Amelia.”
She shook her head.
“You don't understand what he wants.”
I turned toward Victor.
“What does he want?”
Amelia answered.
“He wants to erase the Archive.”
Victor said quietly:
“Yes.”
Amelia continued:
“By destroying it, he'll destroy evidence too.”
I froze.
Victor didn't deny it.
“What evidence?”
“Everything.”
Amelia looked at me.
“Your father's innocence.”
I stared.
“And yours.”
“Yes.”
“And my mother's.”
“Yes.”
“But it would also erase Thomas's crimes.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Victor.
“You want to destroy all of it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the Archive is poisoning everyone who touches it.”
“That doesn't give you the right.”
Victor stepped forward.
“You think justice is about keeping records?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Truth.”
He looked at me.
“Truth has destroyed more families than lies ever did.”
The screen suddenly went black.
A gunshot echoed through the building.
Vance pulled Noah behind him.
“Down!”
Victor moved toward the window.
“Thomas.”
Another shot.
Glass shattered.
Victor grabbed my arm.
“Give me the key.”
“No.”
“If Thomas gets it, everyone dies.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn't.”
He looked at me.
“But you should trust the fact that I want Thomas dead.”
A third shot.
Victor pulled a hidden weapon from his coat.
Vance looked at him.
“You're armed.”
“I never said I wasn't.”
They moved together.
For the first time, the two men who had spent years on opposite sides were fighting the same enemy.
Thomas's men entered the building.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
Vance fired.
Victor disappeared around the corner.
I grabbed Noah and Vance's daughter.
“Stay with me!”
We ran.
Then someone grabbed me from behind.
I fought back.
The man slammed me against the wall.
Before he could do anything, Vanessa attacked him with a metal lamp.
He collapsed.
She stared at me.
“Run!”
“What about you?”
“I'll slow them down.”
“No.”
“Daniel, go!”
I grabbed her hand.
“We go together.”
For the first time, she smiled.
“Maybe you finally understand.”
“What?”
“Family isn't always blood.”
We reached the basement.
A tunnel opened beneath the floor.
Victor appeared.
“This way.”
We followed.
The tunnel was narrow.
Dark.
Cold.
Behind us, footsteps approached.
Noah held my hand.
Then he stopped.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
He pointed at a wall.
A symbol.
The same symbol from his drawings.
“That's where Mommy hid it.”
I stared.
“What's behind the wall?”
Noah touched the symbol.
“The key.”
I looked at the microchip in my hand.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Not that key.”
“Then what?”
“The real one.”
Victor stepped forward.
“Move.”
He pressed the symbol.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Victor stared.
“After all these years.”
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
My mother's handwriting.
Daniel, if you found this, Victor has finally come for the key.
I looked at Victor.
The note continued.
Do not trust him.
Victor's face went pale.
I kept reading.
He will tell you he wants to destroy the Archive.
A pause.
That is true.
Victor whispered:
“Evelyn…”
I continued.
But he will not tell you why.
My heart pounded.
Then the final line appeared.
Victor did not create the Archive to control people. He created it to hide one secret.
I looked at him.
“What secret?”
Victor said nothing.
The box contained one final photograph.
A newborn baby.
Me.
My mother was holding me.
My father stood beside her.
And Victor was behind them.
But there was another person in the photograph.
A young woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Amelia.
She was holding a second newborn child.
I stared.
“No.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What?”
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
The same night Noah was born.
And underneath:
TWO CHILDREN. ONE NAME. ONE INHERITANCE.
My hands began shaking.
“Noah wasn't the only child born that night.”
Victor looked at me.
“No.”
“Who was the other?”
He finally answered.
“Thomas's daughter.”
I stared.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Victor's expression was grim.
“Everything.”
Then footsteps echoed through the tunnel.
Thomas's voice followed.
“You finally found it.”
He stepped into the light.
And behind him stood a woman I had never seen before.
She was holding the second half of the photograph.
She looked at me.
Then at Noah.
And whispered:
“Daniel…”
I froze.
May you like
She smiled sadly.
“I've been waiting six years to meet my brother.”
