CHAPTER 2: The Line Between Family and Harm

CHAPTER 2: The Line Between Family and Harm

At 6:12 a.m., I made the first call.

Not to Lauren.

To the school counselor.

Then the pediatric ophthalmologist.

Then the social worker assigned to our hospital network.

Each conversation stayed factual.

Each detail matched.

Each piece reinforced the same pattern.

Not an accident.

Not a misunderstanding.

A repeated act of control directed at a child who couldn’t defend herself.

When I finally sat back, my phone buzzed.

Lauren.

I let it ring.

Then again.

A voicemail followed.

Her voice was annoyed.

“Are you seriously doing this over glasses?”

I didn’t reply.

Because by then, it was no longer about glasses.

It was about what happened when no one believed a child because the adults were more comfortable with silence.
