CHAPTER 9

CHAPTER 9
EDUARDO STRIKES BACK
People like Eduardo never surrender when the truth catches up to them.
They adapt.
They lie harder.
They threaten louder.
And when those fail…
They become dangerous.
The morning after Judge Mendoza and Notary Rafael Ibarra disappeared across the border, I woke before sunrise to the vibration of my secure phone.
Marco's name flashed across the screen.
The moment I answered, I knew something had changed.
"Laura."
His voice was controlled, but I could hear urgency beneath it.
"You and Daniel need to stay inside."
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?"
"Eduardo knows."
The words settled over me like ice.
"He knows what?"
"He knows you never boarded the flight."
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
"How?"
Marco sighed.
"The airline confirmed your ticket was never scanned."
"He must have checked."
I looked toward Daniel, still asleep beneath his blanket.
"So now he knows."
"Yes."
"And he's panicking."
Within an hour, Elena arrived carrying a folder thick with court filings.
"He moved first."
She placed the papers on the table.
I recognized the heading immediately.
Emergency Petition for Temporary Sole Custody.
Filed at 7:18 a.m.
Less than two hours after discovering I hadn't left the city.
"He didn't waste any time."
Elena shook her head.
"He couldn't."
"He knows we're gathering evidence."
I flipped through the petition.
Every page was another lie.
Laura Morales suffers from emotional instability...
Repeated paranoid episodes...
Financial irresponsibility...
Behavior harmful to the emotional development of the minor child...
My hands began to shake.
Attached were photographs.
Pictures of me leaving the hospital after surgery.
Another of me crying at my grandmother's funeral.
A third showed me sitting alone on a park bench after a difficult day at work.
Each image had been stripped of context.
Rewritten as "evidence" of mental illness.
"He documented everything."
I whispered.
Elena nodded grimly.
"For years."
Then came the final attachment.
A psychological evaluation.
Prepared by Dr. Alejandro Cárdenas.
The same doctor who had secretly met Eduardo.
The report concluded that I posed "a potential emotional risk" to Daniel.
I stared at the signature.
"I've never met this man."
"You don't have to."
Elena replied.
"He wrote the report anyway."
At 9:30 a.m., the media became involved.
My phone filled with notifications.
Someone had leaked the custody filing.
Online headlines appeared almost instantly.
PROMINENT FINANCIAL CONSULTANT ACCUSED OF MENTAL INSTABILITY
MOTHER FACES CUSTODY CHALLENGE
HUSBAND CLAIMS CHILD IN DANGER
Eduardo wasn't just preparing for court.
He was trying me in public first.
Marco entered carrying another tablet.
"You need to see this."
He played a television interview.
Eduardo stood outside the courthouse.
His suit was immaculate.
His expression perfectly measured.
He looked directly into the cameras.
"This is an incredibly painful private matter."
He lowered his eyes just enough to appear heartbroken.
"I've tried for years to protect my wife."
"I only want what's best for our son."
Millions of viewers would believe him.
Because he sounded sincere.
Because monsters rarely look like monsters.
Then the reporter asked,
"Mr. Ríos, are these allegations connected to infidelity?"
Eduardo paused exactly long enough.
"I won't discuss private family matters."
A perfect answer.
Neither confirming nor denying.
Allowing the public to invent the worst possible version of me.
Daniel wandered into the room rubbing his eyes.
He looked at the television.
"Daddy?"
I immediately switched it off.
"It's okay."
He looked confused.
"Why is Daddy on TV?"
I knelt beside him.
"Some grown-ups are saying things that aren't true."
He nodded slowly.
"Like when Tommy blamed me for breaking the classroom window?"
I smiled sadly.
"Exactly like that."
By lunchtime, Eduardo struck again.
This time through the bank.
Despite the preservation order, someone attempted to initiate a transfer from one of my investment accounts.
The transaction failed.
But the request itself proved something.
"He knows we're freezing his access."
Marco looked at the bank records.
"So he's trying to grab whatever he still can."
At 2:00 p.m., another unexpected attack arrived.
A black SUV stopped outside the safe apartment.
Two men stepped out.
Neither wore uniforms.
One carried a clipboard.
The other approached the building entrance.
Marco's security team intercepted them before they reached the elevator.
"Can we help you?"
The taller man smiled politely.
"We're conducting a wellness check."
"For whom?"
"Laura Morales."
Marco immediately requested identification.
The badges appeared legitimate.
But something felt wrong.
Five minutes later, he confirmed it.
Fake.
The badges belonged to a private investigation company hired by Eduardo.
They had posed as government officials.
Trying to discover my location.
"He escalated."
Elena said quietly.
"He doesn't care about legality anymore."
"No."
Marco answered.
"He cares about control."
That evening, Tomás called with another discovery.
"I decrypted one of Eduardo's deleted emails."
"What did you find?"
There was a pause.
"You're not going to like it."
The email had been sent to Silvana six weeks earlier.
Its subject line read:
Operation Sunrise
Laura leaves Tuesday.
Assets transferred Tuesday night.
Doctor Wednesday.
Emergency custody Thursday.
Media release Friday.
Weekend relocation complete.
Monday—new beginning.
My heart pounded.
The schedule wasn't approximate.
It was exact.
Every day.
Every hour.
Every step.
Our entire lives had been reduced to a project timeline.
Daniel wandered into the room carrying his stuffed dinosaur.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Can we draw?"
I looked at the computer screen.
At the lies.
The legal filings.
The conspiracy.
Then at my son.
"Of course."
For thirty minutes we sat on the floor coloring dinosaurs.
No lawyers.
No judges.
No forged documents.
Just a mother and her little boy.
Sometimes survival begins with protecting a child's ability to smile.
At 8:15 p.m., Marco received an urgent message.
"The bank called."
"What now?"
"The safe deposit box."
I stood immediately.
"What about it?"
"They opened it."
My heart stopped.
"How?"
"They didn't."
Marco looked directly at me.
"The police did."
The preservation order had finally been upgraded to a judicial seizure after Lucía's testimony.
Investigators forced the vault open under warrant.
Inside they found everything.
The forged will.
The counterfeit deeds.
Blank notarized forms.
Multiple fake identity cards.
Stacks of unsigned contracts.
Cash.
Foreign currency.
And one sealed envelope marked only with my name.
LAURA
The envelope contained a handwritten letter.
Not from Eduardo.
From someone else.
The signature at the bottom made Elena inhale sharply.
Mauricio Serrano.
The surgeon.
The doctor who had operated on me.
The letter contained only four lines.
I never knew the documents were fraudulent.
I was told they were post-operative consent forms.
I have lived with this mistake every day since.
If anything happens to me, tell Laura I am sorry.
Silence filled the room.
Marco looked up.
"When was it written?"
The evidence technician checked the date.
"Eight months ago."
Eight months.
The surgeon had known the truth.
And he had hidden a confession inside a safe deposit box that wasn't even legally mine.
Why?
Because he hadn't trusted Eduardo.
Or because he feared someone else even more.
Before anyone could answer, Marco's secure phone rang again.
He listened without interrupting.
Then his face turned pale.
"What happened?"
I asked.
He lowered the phone slowly.
"Dr. Mauricio Serrano was supposed to testify tomorrow."
A terrible silence followed.
"He won't."
"Why not?"
Marco met my eyes.
"His car went off a mountain road an hour ago."
The official report called it an accident.
But after everything we had uncovered…
No one in the room believed in accidents anymore.
Eduardo had realized the walls were closing in.
And when desperate men begin losing control…
They stop protecting themselves.
They start eliminating everyone else.
