Chapter 3 — The Truth Behind the Smile

Chapter 3 — The Truth Behind the Smile
Vanessa took one step forward.
"Daniel, she's only a child."
I raised my hand.
"Don't."
"Children don't invent fear."
"You locked her in a room."
"I just needed ten minutes!"
Her voice echoed across the garden.
"I didn't want a crying child ruining our ceremony!"
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.
"It wasn't like that."
"You don't understand."
"No."
I answered quietly.
"I finally do."
She looked desperate.
"I wanted one perfect moment."
"You already had one."
"When Ellie asked if she could call you family."
"You threw it away."
Tears formed in Vanessa's eyes.
"I love you."
I shook my head.
"You loved the version of me that came without responsibility."
I gently brushed Ellie's hair from her face.
"But I was a father long before I was your fiancé."
My mother walked toward us.
She knelt beside Ellie.
"Oh, sweetheart."
"You must have been so scared."
Ellie nodded silently.
Ryan stepped beside me.
"What do you want to do?"
I looked at the officiant.
"There won't be a wedding."
The words echoed across the lawn.
Vanessa burst into tears.
"Please..."
"We can talk about this."
I looked at her one last time.
