Chapter 2 – The Cameras Tell the Truth
The ballroom doors burst open as paramedics rushed toward Sophie.
Blood stained the white ribbon in her hair.
Evelyn refused to let go of her daughter's hand.
"You're safe now," she whispered.
Across the room, Preston still tried to control the narrative.
"She stole my phone!" he shouted. "Everyone saw it!"
Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.
They had seen the phone come out of Sophie's jacket.
But they had also seen a grown man strike an eight-year-old child.
A hotel security manager entered with two police officers.
"Who's in charge here?" one officer asked.
Preston stepped forward immediately.
"Officer, this little girl stole my property."
Before the officer could respond, the security manager spoke.
"Sir... before anyone gives a statement, there's something you need to see."
He held up a tablet.
"Our ballroom security cameras recorded the entire incident."
The color drained from Preston's face.
"What cameras?"
"The four cameras covering this ballroom."
"The hallway."
"The entrance."
"And every guest table."
Silence filled the room.
The officer nodded.
"Let's review the footage."
Minutes later...
Everyone stood inside the hotel's conference room.
The first video appeared.
It showed Sophie sitting beside her mother throughout the reception.
Coloring on the back of her menu.
Eating cake.
Laughing quietly.
Never once approaching the head table.
The next camera showed Preston.
He glanced over both shoulders.
Reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his own phone.
Then quietly slipped it into Sophie's jacket while everyone watched the bride's speech.
Gasps echoed through the room.
"No..."
Their mother whispered.
The final recording showed Preston tearing the heavy oak menu board from its stand and striking Sophie across the head.
No self-defense.
No accident.
Only violence.
The video ended.
No one spoke.
