Chapter 8 – The Bride Chooses

Chapter 8 – The Bride Chooses
The silence inside the hunting cabin felt louder than the news report.
Preston stood motionless, staring at the old battery-powered radio as the announcer continued.
"...investigators have confirmed that newly recovered surveillance footage is being reviewed as part of the criminal case. Authorities continue to search for Preston Whitmore, who remains at large..."
His breathing grew shallow.
"They're bluffing."
He repeated the words to himself.
"They have to be."
But deep down...
He knew Detective Marcus Hale wasn't the kind of man who bluffed.
The detective only spoke when he already knew the answer.
Preston switched the radio off.
The sudden silence was even worse.
Three hundred miles away, Emily Whitmore sat outside the Cook County Courthouse.
The diamond on her left hand was gone.
The tan line beneath it was all that remained of a marriage that had lasted less than twenty-four hours.
Her attorney stepped outside holding a thick folder.
"The annulment petition has been accepted."
Emily nodded.
"I expected that."
"The judge scheduled an expedited hearing because of the criminal investigation."
She took a slow breath.
"What happens now?"
"You become a witness."
Emily looked toward the courthouse doors.
"No."
"I become someone who finally tells the truth."
By noon, reporters had already gathered outside.
The moment Emily emerged, microphones surrounded her.
"Mrs. Whitmore!"
"Do you still support your husband?"
"Did you know about the alleged assault?"
"Have you spoken to Preston?"
She stopped walking.
For a brief moment, every camera in the street focused on her.
Her voice remained calm.
"I did not know what Preston planned."
"I have not spoken to him since my wedding night."
She paused.
Then looked directly into the cameras.
"And after seeing the evidence..."
"...I believe my husband attacked an innocent little girl."
The street fell silent.
Dozens of reporters exchanged stunned looks.
One journalist whispered,
"Did she just turn against him?"
Emily continued.
"No child should ever fear the people who are supposed to protect them."
"I intend to cooperate fully with investigators."
Without answering another question, she walked away.
Within minutes...
Her statement was on every major news network.
At Major Crimes, Officer Daniels rushed into Detective Hale's office carrying a tablet.
"You need to see this."
Hale watched Emily's televised statement from beginning to end.
When the screen went dark, he nodded once.
"She's done pretending."
Daniels leaned against the desk.
"That takes courage."
Hale remained thoughtful.
"It also makes her a target."
He wasn't wrong.
Less than an hour later, Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
"Hello?"
A familiar voice answered.
"Emily."
She froze.
"Preston."
His voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
"I've been watching the news."
She said nothing.
"You embarrassed me."
"No."
She replied quietly.
"You embarrassed yourself."
A long silence followed.
Then he laughed.
"You really think they're going to believe you?"
"I've seen the videos."
"You've seen what they want you to see."
"I saw you plant the phone."
"No."
"You saw part of a story."
Emily closed her eyes.
"There is no story that ends with you hitting an eight-year-old."
His tone hardened instantly.
"You don't know what she did."
"I know exactly what she didn't do."
Another silence.
When Preston spoke again...
His voice was almost gentle.
"You always said you'd stand by me."
Emily felt a tear roll down her cheek.
"I thought I was marrying a good man."
The line went dead.
Detective Hale stared at the phone records an hour later.
"He called her."
Officer Ruiz nodded.
"Burner phone."
"Only forty-seven seconds."
"What did he say?"
Ruiz handed him Emily's written statement.
Hale read it carefully.
"He isn't trying to explain."
"No."
"He's trying to control."
Exactly like every witness had described.
Meanwhile...
Social media exploded.
Someone uploaded a cellphone video recorded by a wedding guest.
It didn't show the assault.
It showed something else.
Immediately after Sophie collapsed...
Several guests could be seen standing frozen.
While Preston's parents walked calmly toward him.
Not toward the child.
Within hours, millions had watched the clip.
Comments flooded every platform.
How could nobody help her?
Those grandparents are heartless.
That little girl deserved better.
People who had attended the wedding anonymously contacted reporters.
Some admitted they regretted staying silent.
Others confessed they had been afraid of the Whitmore family's influence.
The carefully polished image of Chicago's "perfect family" began crumbling in public.
Richard Whitmore watched the news from his attorney's office.
Every channel carried the same headline.
Bride Turns State Witness
He muted the television.
Across the room, his lawyer quietly closed a file.
"Richard..."
"You need to prepare yourself."
"For what?"
"They're coming after everyone who helped him."
Richard stared through the office window.
"I only wanted to protect my son."
His attorney answered softly.
"No."
"You protected him from consequences."
"They're not the same thing."
Margaret Whitmore sat alone in the family mansion.
The house had never felt so empty.
No caterers.
No wedding planners.
No smiling relatives.
Only silence.
She wandered into Preston's childhood bedroom.
Most of it had remained untouched.
Soccer trophies.
Academic awards.
Framed newspaper clippings praising his achievements.
The image everyone had believed.
She opened the bottom drawer of his old desk.
Inside sat dozens of birthday cards.
Most were ordinary.
One wasn't.
It had been written by twelve-year-old Preston.
Not to someone else.
To himself.
One day everyone will do exactly what I tell them.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Had he always been like this?
Or had she simply refused to see it?
That evening, Detective Hale received another unexpected visitor.
Hotel wedding coordinator Sarah Kim.
"I remembered something."
He motioned for her to sit.
"What is it?"
"The bride."
"Emily?"
Sarah nodded.
"About an hour before the ceremony..."
"I overheard Preston telling her something."
"What?"
"He said..."
Sarah thought carefully.
"'Trust me.'
'Everything tonight is going to go exactly as planned.'"
Hale looked down at his notebook.
Another piece.
Another sentence.
Another sign that nothing about the wedding had been accidental.
Across town, Evelyn tucked Sophie into bed.
The little girl seemed quieter than before.
But something had changed.
The fear in her eyes was beginning to fade.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Is Aunt Emily mad at me?"
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"No."
"She isn't your enemy."
Sophie hugged her teddy bear.
"I hope she finds a better husband."
Despite everything...
Evelyn laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one since the wedding.
"So do I."
Later that night, Emily stood alone on the balcony of her apartment.
She held her wedding photograph in both hands.
The smiling bride.
The confident groom.
Two people standing beneath crystal chandeliers.
It looked perfect.
It had been a lie.
She slowly tore the photograph in half.
Then again.
And again.
Until tiny pieces fluttered into the trash can beside her.
She whispered into the empty night,
"I didn't choose you."
"I chose the man I thought you were."
A cool breeze carried the last scraps away.
Far north of Chicago...
Preston sat in darkness.
His burner phone vibrated again.
This time...
A news alert.
ANNULMENT FILED. BRIDE AGREES TO TESTIFY AGAINST FUGITIVE GROOM.
He read the headline three times.
His jaw clenched so tightly that pain shot through his temples.
Emily.
The one person he believed would never betray him.
The one person who knew only the charming version of Preston Whitmore.
She had chosen them.
She had chosen Evelyn.
She had chosen the truth.
For the first time since fleeing...
He wasn't angry at the police.
He wasn't angry at Detective Hale.
He wasn't even angry at Evelyn.
He was furious because the one person he thought he still controlled...
Had slipped beyond his reach.
Outside the cabin, thunder rolled across the distant hills.
Rain began to fall.
Preston stared into the darkness, his expression growing colder by the second.
If Emily was willing to testify...
Then she knew too much.
And somewhere inside his mind...
May you like
A new plan was already beginning to take shape.
