CHAPTER 9: THE SECRET BEHIND THE PHONE

CHAPTER 9: THE SECRET BEHIND THE PHONE
The video loaded slowly.
Too slowly.
The spinning circle on my laptop screen felt like it was mocking me.
As if the universe itself was giving me one last chance to walk away.
One last chance to pretend.
I could close the laptop.
I could delete the file.
I could tell myself I had already seen enough.
My brother attacked my daughter.
My parents helped him.
They tried to take my inheritance.
They tried to question my ability as a mother.
What more could there possibly be?
But deep inside...
I already knew.
The worst secrets are never the ones you discover.
They are the ones you feel coming.
I pressed play.
The image appeared.
My parents' dining room.
The same room where I celebrated birthdays.
The same room where I sat as a child doing homework.
The same room where my mother once told me:
"Family always protects family."
I almost laughed at the memory.
Because now I understood.
She didn't mean everyone.
She meant Preston.
The timestamp appeared.
SEVEN DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING
My father sat at the head of the table.
My mother beside him.
Preston across from them.
Madison next to Preston.
Everyone looked calm.
Organized.
Prepared.
Like this was a business meeting.
Not a family discussion.
My father spoke first.
"Are we certain this is the only way?"
Preston leaned back.
"We've tried everything else."
My mother frowned.
"She refuses to listen."
I felt my chest tighten.
They were talking about me.
Preston smiled.
"Because Evelyn thinks she's untouchable now."
My father looked uncomfortable.
"She is your sister."
A small silence.
Then Preston answered:
"Exactly."
That one word carried so much hatred.
"She has spent years acting like she's better than us."
My mother immediately defended him.
"She forgot where she came from."
I stared at the screen.
Forgot?
I was the one who stayed.
I was the one who helped.
I was the one who paid bills when Preston failed.
I was the one who covered for him.
But somehow...
I was the selfish one.
Preston continued:
"The trust was supposed to go to me."
My heart stopped.
There it was.
The real reason.
Not anger.
Not pride.
Not family honor.
Money.
My inheritance.
My father spoke quietly.
"It was your grandfather's decision."
Preston's expression changed.
"I know."
"Then you know we can't change it."
Preston smiled.
"That's why we have to make Evelyn change it."
The room went cold.
My mother asked:
"How?"
Preston answered:
"By proving she can't handle responsibility."
I paused the video.
My hands were shaking.
Because I finally understood.
The phone.
The accusation.
The attack.
It wasn't about making me feel guilty.
It was about creating a story.
A story where I was careless.
A story where I was unstable.
A story where a judge would eventually ask:
"Should this woman really control a family fortune?"
I pressed play.
Madison spoke for the first time.
"What about the phone?"
Preston nodded.
"That creates the beginning."
"The beginning of what?"
my mother asked.
Preston looked directly at her.
"The beginning of Evelyn losing control."
My stomach twisted.
Control.
That word again.
They didn't want my money.
Not only.
They wanted power over me.
Preston continued.
"Once everyone believes Sophie stole from me..."
He paused.
"Evelyn will defend her."
My father nodded slowly.
"Of course she will."
Preston smiled.
"Exactly."
"And when she becomes emotional..."
A pause.
"Everyone will see what we need them to see."
I stopped the video.
I couldn't breathe.
Because I remembered that night.
I remembered my father saying:
"Your daughter embarrassed this family."
I remembered my mother saying:
"Don't ruin your brother's day."
They weren't reacting.
They were performing.
I continued watching.
Madison looked nervous.
"What if things go wrong?"
Preston laughed.
"They won't."
"What if Sophie gets hurt?"
Everyone became quiet.
For one moment...
I thought someone would object.
My father.
My mother.
Anyone.
Instead...
My father said:
"Make sure it doesn't become serious."
My entire body went numb.
Not stop.
Not don't do it.
Just don't make it serious.
Preston nodded.
"Relax."
Then he said something that made me freeze.
"The phone isn't even the important part."
The room went silent.
My heart started racing.
"What do you mean?"
Madison asked.
Preston leaned forward.
"The phone is only the reason people start questioning her."
"Then what is the real purpose?"
Preston smiled.
"Access."
The word echoed.
Access.
My eyes moved back to the screen.
Preston continued:
"Everyone thinks the trust is protected because Evelyn is the beneficiary."
A pause.
"But beneficiaries can be challenged."
My father asked:
"Through guardianship?"
Preston nodded.
"Exactly."
I felt sick.
They weren't just planning to take my inheritance.
They were planning to take away my ability to protect it.
Then Preston opened a folder.
A document.
The camera couldn't capture everything.
But one word was clear.
GUARDIANSHIP PETITION
My breathing stopped.
The same petition they filed after the wedding.
They had prepared it before the attack.
Before Sophie was hurt.
Before anyone knew anything.
The entire family crisis was manufactured.
The video continued.
Madison asked:
"But why involve Sophie?"
Preston looked annoyed.
"Because Evelyn has one weakness."
My heart tightened.
"Sophie."
He continued:
"She will destroy herself to protect that child."
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the only thing he got right.
I would.
I would destroy anything.
Any relationship.
Any illusion.
Any false peace.
To protect my daughter.
The video ended.
For several minutes, I sat in silence.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Reed.
I answered.
"Evelyn?"
"Yes."
His voice was serious.
"Did you watch the file?"
"Yes."
A pause.
"Then you know."
"Know what?"
"The phone was never just planted to frame Sophie."
I looked at the frozen screen.
"What else?"
Detective Reed took a breath.
"We traced the phone's data."
My stomach tightened.
"And?"
"It wasn't empty."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Preston deleted the visible files."
A pause.
"But he missed something."
My voice became quiet.
"What?"
"The phone contained hidden recordings."
I sat up.
"Recordings?"
"Yes."
"Of what?"
Another pause.
"Of Preston."
The room became silent.
"How many?"
"Six."
Six recordings.
I looked back at the video.
At Preston's confident face.
The man who believed he controlled everything.
"Detective..."
"Yes?"
"Why would he record himself?"
His answer was simple.
"He didn't."
I froze.
"What?"
"He wasn't recording himself."
A pause.
"He was recording someone else."
My heart began pounding.
"Who?"
Detective Reed lowered his voice.
"The first recording is from three months before the wedding."
"Who is in it?"
A long silence.
Then:
"Your grandfather."
I stopped breathing.
"My grandfather has been dead for years."
"I know."
"Then how?"
Detective Reed answered:
"Because your grandfather left behind a message."
I stared at the phone.
A dead man's voice.
A hidden recording.
A secret my family buried.
And suddenly...
The phone Preston planted to destroy me...
May have been the thing that finally saved me.
Because hidden inside the device everyone thought was evidence against my daughter...
Was the truth about why my family had been fighting over me for years.
May you like
And the next recording would reveal the secret my grandfather never wanted Preston to find.
