The ambulance doors closed as Emma held her daughter, Chloe, tightly against her chest.
Across the hotel lobby, Detective Aaron Mills approached the reception desk.
"We need every security recording from tonight."
Emma's older brother, Daniel, folded his arms confidently.
"You'll only see my niece stealing my watch."
The hotel manager hesitated.
"Our cameras cover the ballroom from three different angles."
Daniel's confident smile faltered.
"What do you mean... three?"
Within minutes, officers gathered around the security monitor.
The video rolled.
Guests mingled.
Children laughed.
Then Daniel quietly walked behind Chloe's chair.
He glanced around.
Reached into his own pocket.
And slipped the missing watch into the little girl's sweater without anyone noticing.
The room fell silent.
Detective Mills paused the video.
Then rewound it.
Again.
