Chapter 8

The Brother Behind the Mask

The world had finally seen the truth.

But the truth was only the first layer.

For years, everyone believed they knew Preston Whitmore.

The brilliant businessman.

The generous son.

The perfect husband.

The man who always walked into a room and made people believe he belonged at the center of it.

That was the mask.

And masks were dangerous.

Not because they hid ugliness.

But because people trusted what they saw.

The morning after the recordings were released, Preston's world began collapsing.

His company stock dropped.

Partners canceled meetings.

Friends who once fought for his attention stopped answering his calls.

The same people who had celebrated him at his wedding now pretended they had never known him.

But I knew something.

A man like Preston did not fall quietly.

He fought.

And when he fought...

He hurt people.

Detective Reed called me at seven in the morning.

"Evelyn, we need you to stay alert."

I sat up immediately.

"What happened?"

"We found something about Preston's past."

I looked toward Sophie's bedroom.

She was still sleeping.

"What kind of something?"

A pause.

"The kind that explains everything."

I met Detective Reed and Olivia at his office.

A thick file sat on the table.

"Where did this come from?"

I asked.

"An old employee."

"Someone who worked for Preston?"

Detective Reed nodded.

"Someone who knew him before he became famous."

He opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger Preston.

Maybe twenty years old.

Standing beside another boy.

I looked closer.

"Who is that?"

Detective Reed answered quietly.

"His older half-brother."

I frowned.

"I didn't know Preston had a brother."

"Most people don't."

He placed another document down.

"Because Preston made sure nobody remembered."

The man's name was Daniel Whitmore.

He was the first son of my grandfather.

The original heir.

The child who was supposed to inherit the family company.

Until one night...

Everything changed.

Daniel disappeared.

The family story was that he left voluntarily.

That he wanted nothing to do with business.

That he had abandoned the Whitmore name.

But the truth was different.

Daniel had discovered something.

A secret about the company.

A secret someone wanted buried.

"How does this connect to Preston?"

I asked.

Detective Reed looked at me.

"Because Daniel was supposed to inherit everything."

I understood.

Preston wasn't born the golden son.

He became the golden son after someone else was removed.

Olivia looked through the documents.

"There are missing records."

Detective Reed nodded.

"Exactly."

"Someone erased Daniel's existence."

That night, I searched through old family albums.

For the first time, I looked at them differently.

Not as memories.

As evidence.

There were photographs of Preston.

Every birthday.

Every achievement.

Every celebration.

But Daniel...

Almost nothing.

A person had been erased.

Just like I had spent years feeling erased.

Then I found something.

A photograph hidden behind another picture frame.

My grandfather.

My father.

A young Preston.

And a boy standing slightly behind them.

Daniel.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

"The first child always carries the truth."

I stared at the words.

What truth?

The next day, someone came to my house.

I immediately became cautious.

After everything...

Trust was difficult.

I opened the door slightly.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying a worn leather bag.

"Are you Evelyn Carter?"

"Who are you?"

He looked at me.

"I think you know."

My heart stopped.

"Daniel?"

He nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man my family erased...

Was standing in front of me.

"I heard about Sophie."

He said quietly.

I stepped back.

"How?"

"The news."

His eyes became sad.

"I recognized the pattern."

"What pattern?"

He looked toward my house.

"The Whitmores always sacrifice someone to protect the person they choose."

Those words hit harder than I expected.

I invited him inside.

Sophie was at school.

Safe.

Away from another family secret.

Daniel sat at my table.

"I spent twenty years trying to expose them."

"Why didn't you?"

He smiled sadly.

"Because people believe powerful families."

"And they don't believe the person who disappeared."

He pulled a folder from his bag.

"I have something."

I opened it.

Inside were old company records.

My eyes widened.

"What is this?"

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your grandfather didn't create a company."

"He created a system."

I frowned.

"A system?"

"Where the strongest person survives."

He explained.

After Daniel discovered financial fraud inside the company, he tried to tell the family.

Nobody listened.

Instead...

They protected the person responsible.

The same pattern.

The same excuse.

"The family cannot be embarrassed."

The family name mattered more than the truth.

"Who was responsible?"

I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

For a long moment...

He said nothing.

Then:

"Your father."

I froze.

"No."

Daniel didn't look away.

"Your father was the first person who learned how to protect Preston."

I thought about the office.

The documents.

The trust.

Everything connected.

"Why tell me now?"

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"Because Preston made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He thought Sophie was his enemy."

A pause.

"But Sophie isn't the person who can destroy him."

My stomach tightened.

"Who is?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

"You."

That night, Preston called.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

"Evelyn."

"What do you want?"

A long silence.

Then he said:

"You don't know what you're uncovering."

I smiled coldly.

"For once, Preston..."

"I think I do."

His voice lowered.

"You think this is about Sophie."

A pause.

"It's not."

"Then what is it about?"

His answer froze my blood.

"It's about why your grandfather put that trust in her name."

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Why?"

Preston whispered:

"Because he knew someone in this family would eventually become a monster."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Because for the first time...

I wondered if Preston was warning me.

Or threatening me.

And the most terrifying part was this:

May you like

I still didn't know which one was worse.
